Silver uMax Coil Questions

I notice that the Tesoro website page for the Silver uMax gives two sizes for the standard equipment coil. Under Features it says 8" Concentric Coil, but under Searchcoil Size it says 5"diameter.

Two questions:
#1..Does anyone know what size coil comes standard on a new Silver uMax ?
#2..Is the coil waterproof ?

Thanks,

Todd :)

I purchased one recently it came with a stock waterproof 8" Concentric "Brown polo" as all r advertized

*8" coil for sure thats the reason i got rid of my silver umax i hated the 8" coil but could not aford the 5.75 but i may get another someday and would get the 7" widscan the 3x 18 and the 4" over all its a good machine if it was the only detector i had i would get the 5.75 to go whith the silver Umax

Gunnar,

Thanks for your reply !

Why did you hate the 8" coil ?

Todd :)

You are not the only one I have heard that didn't like the stock 8" brown coil. I really like it myself. Steve.

trueblue,

I appreciate your reply !

Re "Brown polo", I assume the coil is brown colored, but I don't get the connection of a coil to "polo". Do you know ?

Thanks,

Todd :)

Hi SkiWhiz !

Thanks for replying !

In regard to the 8" coil, what specific complaints were you hearing from others ?

Glad it works for you

The brown coil seems to work great for me. My only complaint is it seems heavy compared to the rest of detector. An open frame coil instead of epoxy filled would give it better balance. IMHO

I can't remember exactly, I visit alot of different forums and do alot of reading. But I do remember Monte not caring for the stock brown 8" coil but don't know why he doesn't like it, I think maybe because it can get hung up if hunting in the woods, etc. I like it as much as a spider type coil, you can see the pinpoint spot (center of hole). Steve.

OK.....thanks again Steve ;)

One reason I tried the 9x8 coil on the Silver uMax I had was for better depth and a little lighter weight. Well not only was it just as heavy or heavier but I didn't get any more depth than I did with the stock coil. Steve.

Thanks Larry !

Overall weight and balance are important to me at age 67, with more than a passing acquaintance with Mr. Arthr-itis

I wonder if Tesoro would substitute a smaller coil, perhaps the 5.75 dia., which is the same price, but also includes the coil cover. Do you think it's likely they would do it ?

I copied the upper part of the uMax coil list off of the Tesoro website and attached below for reference.

I believe that any good dealer will work with you on that. I would call some Tesoro dealers and ask them, worth a try. I have dealt with a bunch of different 5 star Tesoro dealers and all of them have been wonderful people. Steve.

Appreciate your feedback Steve ! Think I'll try that (substituting the 8" coil for the 5.75") when I order. ;)

Has anyone had experience using the Silver uMax with the 8" Round Concentric (Coil-RC-SB) and alternately with the 5.75" (RC-5.75C-SW), and was there a noticeable difference in weight and/or balance ?

Thanks,

Todd :)

I haven't used a small coil on a Silver uMax but have used the 5.75" on a Cibola and a 4" on another Tesoro and yes it is lighter. But in my opinon all Tesoro's (including the Silver uMax) are very light and well balanced with their stock coils. In my opinion the Silver uMax is the best detector there is and probably always will be under $250.00 Steve.

some like the smaller coil cause you can get closer to metal object in tot lots, jungle gyms etc.

Thanks pulltab !

I like the "tot lots" and also have had good luck finding clad around tables in picnic areas. The smaller coil should be good around tables with metal pipe legs, that's for sure.
