Silver uMax coil bolt...?

I bought a used Silver uMax about a month ago and was wondering if they come original with a metal bolt holding the coil to the lower shaft? Does this cause any detecting problems because its metal?

Stainless bolts used to be standard on the detectors. Now they use a ceramic type bolt (isoplast). I like the stainless much better because the isoplast bolts break and strip out easily.

I don't think this bolt is stainless steel cause it has a yellowish tint and has a lock washer that's definitly not SS. What ya think? Detector seems to perform ok! Like my Grey Ghost I got from you! Thanks Ron

I don't think the steel bolt or washer will impair the performance as they do not move relative to the coil, unless of course your coil flops. If it is a concern though you can purchase a nylon bolt, washers and butterfly nut at most hardware outfits. I found though that as Brian says they strip out easily, so I carry a spare. They cost very little. I've noticed no real difference though since changing to nylon from the stainless steel one my Bandido 2mmax came with.

Gujess I'll leave well enough alone. I'll not try to out engineer Tesoro. Seems like they know what they're doing. Ron

I have 3 different Tesoro models. Each came with a metal bolt holding the coil and I haven't ever had a problem that would point to the bolt as the cause.

The metal coil bolts are normally made of a low-conductive stainless steel with the inserts being sometimes made of brass on the plastic retainer.
Remember though that these machines operate based on the relative motion of the coil to the target. The coil bolts and retainers move with the coil, so there is no relative motion between them, thus no possibility of producing a signal from the bolt and retainer.
While there might be some slight distortion in the actual electromagnetic field produced by the coil due to the presence of the bolt and retainer insert, it will be minimal. The plastic or nylon bolts and nuts are more a psychological advantage than anything else....... <img src="/metal/html/wink.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=";)">
