Silver umax arrived today!

Ultra MD newbie here  After about a month of research and reading reviews I finally ordered a Silver umax. I figured that it was a simple enough MD to learn with. I mean really, two knobs and a toggle switch, how much easier could it get?

Anyway, I'm sure i'll have some questions as I learn this machine and new hobby. Any beginner advice is appreciated in advance.

Thanks guys,
Jeff

Let me tell ya Jeff, you just got yourself one fine detector. I have been detecting many years and have had alot of brands/models of detectors & I am going to order myself a Silver uMax this comming Monday. I had one last summer and loved it, sold it to try some different models & now going back to the Silver uMax. You might not believe me but I have had days detecting with the Silver uMax that it tired me out digging coins. It is a coin and jewelry magnet. In my opinion it is the best under $250.00 detector made. Enjoy your new Silver! Steve.

You said - Anyway, I'm sure i'll have some questions as I learn this machine and new hobby. Any beginner advice is appreciated in advance.

The most important advice that I can give you is - put a nail on the ground and set your discrimination to just knock out the nail & dig everything that beeps, this way you won't miss any rings.
Also you can gain alittle more depth running the Silver uMax in "all metal" mode. Set your discrimination to where you want it/ hunt in all metal mode/ get a beep/ flip the toggle switch into disc. mode/ this will tell you if it is iron or not.
Also when hunting in disc. mode you can "thumb" (turn up) the disc. dial until your unearthed target is discriminated out - this will give you a good idea what the target will be. Throw some different coins/jewelry/pull tabs/etc. on the ground and play around with the disc. dial to see where each target gets discriminated out.
To pinpoint with the Silver uMax, after getting a beep keep making your swing shorter and shorter over the target until you have it narrowed down & the target will be right in the middle of the coil. Sorry for such a long post.

i also have the silver umax , i find just as much as whith my former M-6 this is how you can tell if the beep is a deep target or a near suface as you are swinging lift it up until it stops beeping if you get to 6" obove the ground its near suface if you only get 1" its deeper and biger objects tend to beep over a wide erea unlike a coin that beeps in a pinpont erea i love its lightweight and it is a very good detector i run in all metal most of the time and it really barks at nickles keep us informed you will do great

Don't forget to bring deep pockets, you will need them to store all the "goodies" that Silver is going to find ya. Let us know how you do. Steve.

Congratulations Jeff. Very good machine.

Tot lots with sand are a good place to learn because easier to scoop through sand than dig in turf.

99% of us use headphones. Hope you got some.

I like to 'verify' my MD when I go out... toss out a nickel and listen to it's sound.
Even better if you can test each time with a small gold ring.

gunnar great advice seems so simple yet I didn't think of raising the coil up.

I'm still tying to learn mine, I'm not a newbe just use to an XLT. But it gets better with every outing
