Silver Umax and Can Slaw

Searched a park today with the 8 stock coil, and there was a lot of can slaw that sounded like good targets. What was interesting is that every piece of slaw I hit would discriminate out right after the zinc setting. Some pieces would crackle out, and others just drop out. A bit annoying, but learned something new. I wonder if the 5.75 coil or clean sweep would disc out slaw in same manner..

Always best regards, Carlos

I don't know if it was just my unit but my Silver w/5.75" coil broke up better on some canslaw, so I don't think it would be necessary to raise the discrimination that high with the small coil.

Discrimination is great if you're looking for silver and clad but once you drown out pull nickels/tabs so goes the gold. Even with a Golden uMax, can slaw will drive you nuts.

I can't speak for the Silver as it's one of the few Tesoros I've never owned, but on the Vaquero if you train your ear, you can hear a slight raspiness to can slaw that is not present on coins. I call it "hearing the shape" as I think that's as close a description as I can come up with. Sometimes I dig can slaw because I missed the nuance, but it's no more than I dig with my MX Sport.

Hi Dan, I went back and tested it out and listened carefully. You are correct, there is a slight rasp with some instances of the pesky Slaw. Thanks for your insight!

Very Best, Carlos

This is the reason why I study these forums. Always I find someone who has experience I lack that can help me make my hunting more enjoyable. Many hours could be wasted trying to figure out something that someone else already has. Great tip danb!

Don't let anyone ever convince you that a Tesoro is a limited machine. There is so much expression in that "single tone". Use a Tesoro long enough and you'll be calling the finds with scary accuracy before you dig.

Yep, right again. In fact I have come back to the Silver Umax more than once for that reason. The audio is fantastic. I just found it odd that I had never come across the Slaw challenge until this time around. Usually
On any machine, Slaw knocks out early in the disc in my experience. Perhaps this Umax is a little hot or this particular park has an affect. The park moist in the shaded areas, where I like to hunt in the perimeter, where the Slaw tends to be at this park. I've tried a lot of detectors, and own several, some with TID, but love the Umax. Sometimes I just want to turn on and go, especially in the hot summer, and the Umax is always fun and productive wherever I take it.
Like a lot of us, I buy and sell detectors to try different ones, this is third time over the years that I picked up a Silver Umax, this time brand new! :)

Yep, love y'all . Thanks everyone for chiming in on this one!

If you get a loud signal, too good to be true. Raise the coil, still hear it as good, probably trash. I know this but sometimes I forget to do it. Than I get "trashed" big time.

Yes, raise the coil and if you're still hearing it 18" off the ground, keep on moving. With the Tejon, you can hear crushed pop cans because of the tiny little "retune" chirp when you swing past the target. Listen for it next time. It's very distinctive. Unfortunately, that doesn't carry over to the Vaquero, but lifting the coil is the next best thing.
