Would the 4.0 or the 5.75 be a help in the tot lots, or would it be a waste of money? Would I be better to buy a Campadre, Also any ideas on coils to go deeper for coins, if I buy one i don't want to send it back for retune so what coils work best out of the box?

I say that the smaller coils would & do help in the tot lots and anywhere else it is trashy. I just bought a 5.75" coil for my Sidewinder uMax. I haven't got the Sidewinder or the 5.75" coil delivered to me yet but have owned & used both the 4" and the 5.75" on a few other uMax models icluding a Silver uMax in the past. No only are they productive because you can get to alot of spots that no one else can with a larger coil (example - very close to the metal poles), they are also alot of fun to use. I have tried a 10x12 coil on a Silver uMax and honesty didn't find any extra depth than I got with the stock brown round 8" concentric coil. I really like the stock coil that comes with the Silver uMax. It isn't necessary to send your detector back to the factory to retune to a different coil. digdug1228, skiwhiz is right about the small 5.75 coil in trashy areas. it will find coins the stock coil can't see because of target masking. i bought the 5.75 coil for my silver umax earlier this summer and first trip out with it to an old church i have hunted many times with the 8 inch coil produced 4 indian head pennies and a mercury dime. it is fun to hunt with and will pay for itself in finds.................roger
It isn't possible to power balance a silver Umax ...... it might be if you take the housing apart and tweak a pot inside, but that'll void your warranty and isn't worth the hassle of doing it.
A different than stock coil w/ a detector with out ground balance will work fine, but if you want optimum performance the detector does need to be calibrated..
I think If I got the 5" coil I'd send it in for calibration then just keep that coil on it all the time.

I don't want to start a war but I doubt that it would void the warranty if a person removes the 2 screws on the faceplate and adjusts the trim pot. Another thing I caould never grasp is sending in a sample of dirt/ground and having the detector "tuned" to it. First of all you will have to disturb the natural state of your ground by digging it up, then have it dry out while its on its way to the factory, and more than likely a person will send in a very small amount of dirt from one place, what about all the other areas a person hunts, ground makeup can change a great deal from even 2 nearby fields. Adjusting a g.b. pot. inside a detector is one thing, modifying it is another. Steve.

yeah, I assumed opening up the housing and tweaking settings would void the warranty......seriously, all the electronics at my job have 'void warranty' warning labels all over them against opening them ;-)
personally, I wouldn't send one in for ground balance... but my Silver Umax just stopped working one day and it was practically brand new....I was afraid to tinker with it after that, because I want to preserve its warranty
I also opted to mod a second hand tesoro to add ground balance for other coils and just to have better GB.
By no means did I mean to start a war either........just trying to help ;-)

When I sais I don't want to start a war I wasn't aiming at you digitaltim. Over the years I have mentioned removing the faceplate to tweak a pot.,etc. and some of the members would jump all over me. I know you were just trying to help. Steve.
