Silver U-Max or Cibola "NEED ADVICE"

Prospector

New member
I am thinking of buying either a Cibola or Silver U-max for coins, jewerly and relics. First of all how do they compare? Secondly, has anyone tried the 9x8 coil on a Silver U-max and if so what kind of depth over the stock 8" coil did you get?

I've never used it, but a lot of people on this forum use and love the Silver UMax. I have a Cibola and have been very pleased with it.

3 months ago you wrote: " I have used both the Cibola and Silver U-max and don't see a lot of depth difference."

Since you've had both machines in the past, which machine did you like better?

Apples and oranges.

I've have a Silver and had a Cibola.

I love both.

It was my experience that ground

interference effected the Silver a little more.

But both do great under most conditions.

If you have a problem with ground interference,

get one with a manual ground balance control.

Happy Hunting,

Although I don't have a Cibola, Tab's right about the ground interference. If I hear signals that are sort of clipped and then get back to normal when I slow down, I know that I'm in ground minerals that are heavier than normal. Slowing the sweep speed down in these areas gets a lot of coins that I would miss at my normal pace.:smoke:

I have owned them both, the cibola whith the 8x9 is deeper no doubt about it and the cibola has the amazing ability to be turned down way down so that you will not get a coin below 3" or you can turn it way up and get deep 6_ 8 " on dime the silver can not be tuned down very well but it has a nice all metal mode but if i could chose between the two the cibola would be it but if you could spare a bit more money the vaquero would kick but on both of them im saving for a vaquero its got a good ED 180 and a kick but all metal mode and whith the manual ground balance you may just very well get some added depth over the cibola

Give me one Tesoro to choose and I would pick the Cibola over all the others. And I've either had or have all of their detectors. My Cibola with the 5.75 concentric gets almost as good depth as my Tejon with the 8x9. i wouldn't believe it either. And I have yet to find ground that it wouldn't hunt pretty well in. And that includes Brandy Station in Virginia, which is nothing but iron. I think there are differences between the Cibola and the Vaquero besides the ground balance. The Cibola is a great relic hunter. I don't know why it outperforms the others, don't care. But it's my favorite Tesoro.

but guess I didn't??? Maybe I'm older than I think:rolleyes:

Anyway, all the Tesoros are winners. I've been at this hobby a long time (40 years). I've used the Tesoros and all have greatly rewarded me.

Should you buy the Cibola or Silver uMax? It depends.

The Cibola with stock coil will be deeper than the Silver with stock coil. This is mostly do to the Cibola having a larger/deeper coil.

Put the 9x8 on the Silver and it will be very close to the Cibola.

My opinion is, put the 12x10 concentric coil on the Silver and it will beat the Cibola (with stock coil).

The coil diameter and design is what makes a Tesoro deeper. DD coils are not as deep as concentric coils (assuming they're the same diameter). But, DD coils have a much broader scan area than do concentric coils). DD's are for excellent ground coverage and good depth and concentrics are for excellent depth and good ground coverage.

Which you should buy depends on too many factors to cover here. Factors such as money, new or used, using the big 12x10 concentric, etc.

With Tesoro the coil used is the big difference. The deepest coil Tesoro makes is the 12x10 concentric. I've often wished they'd make a round 15 inch concentric for the uMax series.

My main detector today is the Silver Umax fitted with the 12x10. I've also owned and used the Tejon, Nautilus IIB, Minelab SE, Sovereign GT, Tesoro DeLeon, and too many others to list. To me for my needs right now the Silver uMax with the 12x10 is my best detector. I really love digging Indian cents!

searches with less noise...

I don't know what it is about the newer hot detectors....I don't think they can ignore aluminum well. The tone has a distinct sound though, its so smooth that I almost always can tell its aluminum. Then I dig it hoping its gold.

you can't go wrong with either.

I'm lucky to have both.
