Silver U Max coils..

nad

New member
I have a Silver U Max with the standard coil..I placed a WTB in the Detector classified for a 3 by 18 wide sweep coil.If I get one, that solves one hunting problem..The other is very trashy ground..Small coils are reputed to be less sensitive to masking than larger coils.. Everyone seems to favor the 5.75 inch coil for this kind of site...But, there is a 4 inch coil , also, sold by Tesoro....Would the smaller coil be better in a trash environment? Simple Spock logic never works..., What am I missing, in seeing the 5.75 is more popular than the 4 inch coil? As ever, many thanks for your input..Cordially Nad

I've used the stock, the 7", and 4". The 7" is pretty good in trash the 4 cherry picks thru very heavy trash pretty well, but is frustrating due to such limited ground coverage unless you're a very patient person. I haven't used the 5.75, but I intend to get one, one of these days and I'm guessing it would be a really nice compromise for the heavier trashed areas. My two bits.

Larry, the 5.75 is plenty small and gets damn good depth. Dave

I feel the 5.75 is a good compromise for a small coil user in trashy areas or near metal stuff like in tot lots. It gets good depth for its size (have heard the 4" drops off in the depth department - but I haven't used one). I would imagine the 4" has its place but the coverage for overlap sweeps is a bit too small for me in most cases. Might be a good cherry pick coil but like I say, I haven't used one.
I have used coils smaller than the 5.75 on other machines, and I did enjoy them under the right conditions and when I wasn't out for a very short hunt time.
I occasionally hunt in areas where the tree roots are exposed along a stream from wash out, and the small coils worked best for me poking them in the exposed roots. Same can go for working under brush. More extreme - I have used the Uni-probe and the SunRay probe (other machines) for the really tight areas. Has done me well at times.
