Silver ring VDI ?

New member
I found another ring today. I can't read inside, eyes not good enough. It looks like silver to me. Can anyone tell me if a vdi of 78 would be a good read for silver on the pro? When i figure out my camera and new Apple computer i will post some pictures.

Could be, depends on it's size. Most silver rings I have found come in from 80-81 to 90 something. They are out of most pull tab range which is probably I find more of them instead of gold :)

My silver ring came in at 90-92 it had a wide band and wieghed 5.1 grams

Don't get too anal with the VDI numbers. They are a probability of the conductivity of the target under the coil. The AT Pro has an excellent audio system built into it to compliment the VDI number reading. Silver tends to read in the low 80's, however, silver does oxidize to a greater or lesser degree based on the surrounding matrix composition. It has been observed from my own personal experience that the VDI number will drop a few notches as the level of oxidation on the surface of a ring increases.

I would definitely dig it, and even more so if it was a strong stable signal with the coil going over the target in different directions. The audio on the AT Pro is a real asset to help with getting a good probability of what's under the coil. And when in doubt, dig it anyways....it costs you nothing and will teach you what a different type of target will sound like.

I should clarify. When I found the ring it came in at a 79-81 reading. I thought it was a dime. The 78 reading i see is in my garage. It does read up to 81 when I air test it.

I've found silver rings that VDI from the low 90's to as low as 63 depends on the size of the ring. Most of my "average" sized rings have VDI in the lower 80's like around 82-83. As John said DIG EM ALL, there is no magic bullet that truly indicates it's silver, if so all silver coins would ring up the same number.

Here is a silver .925 earring that I found today that VDI's at 67 68 69, its tiny if it was larger the numbers would have been PROportionally higher.

Minimally I woulds invest in a pair of 2x reading glasses, some of those .925's & 14 K's are pretty small
