Silver on every detecting trip ??????????

Elton

New member
I see a few who do manage this feat. I see more including myself who does not.

It depends on location..Detecting ability, and to an extent time spent in the field detecting.

The biggest is most likely location, and separation abilities of your detector. Coil choice etc.

I do admit I am always a little skeptical of every hunt one goes on producing silver. I have done this for a very long time and it just doesn't happen on all outings. I also hate to see the hobby being depicted as a competition for showing the most silver etc. finds every time a post is made.

Sure it's nice..But if that is your only goal then your missing a good portion of the hobby.. There are a lot of fun & interesting things to find while detecting than just coins (SILVER)....plus I feel the enjoyment of the hobby is the true goal.

So I guess what I am saying is post up your finds.. New money, Silver, Copper , other items.............. or just a good story about detecting. We all enjoy reading the stories. That is what detecting is all about. The overall experience. We still admire you if you never find that great find to post up.. Competition isn't the goal of detecting...

so many different facets of this hobby that it just depends on where you are at in the hobby? Took me about 10yrs (of 24yrs) to realize I liked searching for the old coins and really don't care about anything else for the most part? Is it a competition? Oh yes it is! They don't make them anymore and everyday someone digs one up that is one more that is gone for good. Your opinion may be that it isn't about competition may be true for many different facets of the hobby but not for old coin shooting. Competition is a good thing, it makes you stronger, more persistant, forces you to try and become "one" with your machine, maybe do that little bit extra whatever that it takes to find that one old coin? It's a competition with yourself......

I post all my good finds and once in awhile I post the junkier stuff also (clad, rings, toys etc.). Seeing the good finds posted (coins) by some of the "heavy hitters" around here INSPIRE me to go out sometimes when I really don't feel like it? Competition is a GOOD thing.......in MY opinion.

Keep on posting those old coins.....they inspire some of us!

If you only "OLD COIN" hunt...then of course you only want old coins. My thoughts are there are other aspects to detecting that is very enjoyable....

.................. I still think just detecting for the fun of detecting is better than making it a competition hobby all the time oneguy..

How ever if that is what you enjoy Good for you !!!!... That is ok too.. Go find some old coins my friend and post em up for all of us to enjoy ....:)

I see you have found 45 Silvers in 2015.I hope you hit 100 or more.. Good luck buddy...

I've found myself a good share of silver over the years but as those nearby honey holes dry up the silver gets to be slim pickens at best.
For those who find silver on a regular basis, its got to be location, location, location...and the will, money and free time to get to those locations.

There are those who take day or even weekend trips to potential new silver fields far away. For me these days i got way too much other stuff going on to be a competitive silver hunter. Not interested nor have the free time to go gallivanting hundreds of miles away on some silver quest at least in the foreseeable future.

These days i enjoy detecting (when i can) to just get out and BS with anyone willing to participate. Finding silver is only a plus.
For those with the silver fever, time, money, etc., more power to them.

I heard of a few guys like that who claimed to get 500 silver coins a year out of are pounded Chicago Parks? These guys hadn't been detectin' 2-3 years tops. Even though they had Etrac's I still find it hard to believe as they also work full time day shift. Some guys just want to be king of the forum they are on. JMHO.

When I take my detector out for a walk what I have on my mind is to find silver, coins ,metals, toys, anything.I do dig junk. This hobby does give you history that you hold in your hand, who lost it,what were they doing, how long did it take them to realize they lost a coin, spoon, ring or a key?I do enjoy researching for places to hunt. Some days I come home with a nice bottle cap, pull tab or a chunk of iron. The enjoyment of being able to get out and to figure out what the detector is picking up is very relaxing to me.---------after1------------

I hunt in Rockford IL. Aka Little Detroit.About 45 min. from " Harrold IL" I find more dope pipes, shell casings, knives then I do Silver coins and i hunt all day long twice a week weather permiting.
The most Silver coins I ever found in a single hunt 3.That was a private residence with permission. Most Silver coins in a year 10-12
Not great when you consider I hunt parks, forest preserves, private with permission.
I've been detecting 30+ years! Not finding Silver used to really bum me out.But... As I've gotten older I've realized anything made of metal has some value.
I dig everything above 50 on my Delta & Gamma
I even take all the Aluminum cans I find. The only metal I don't keep is the dope pipes.
Honestly my favorite finds are Religious Charms and regular Charms for lack of a better term since my Wife collects them.I find a handful every year and it makes her day.
She doesn't care if they're Gold,Silver, plated etc.Obiviously she likes the previous two better but still likes them all.
She likes Diamonds too but thats still on the bucket list.
If I had a digital camera I would post my weekly finds.i get alot of clad every week, weird stuff, jewelry item/ring etc. probably every other week mostly costume but something.
Talk about something that sells fast at yard sales costume jewelry and dug match box cars.
I would be just as happy finding a corroded IHC as I would a Silver coin.
I love American History as much if not more than the shiny stuff.
GL & HH everyone!

Ditto......as long as it's old and a coin

As far as my "competition" statement made above....let me clarify? I'm a goal setter from way back and I compete against myself. I want to learn my machine to the best of my abilities and of course find the targets I seek while having some fun. My goals this yr. are to find more old coins than last yr and to not dig as many newer coins, manage my time in the field better? If I should reach my goal this yr then next yr it'll get bumped up a notch...??

There's also the time factor? I'm getting older, declining health and only so much time before the snow flies..........

Plain and simple, I love detecting and finding silver and other older coins. I got started with the hobby back in 1972 mainly for the chance to add to my coin collections. Although I no longer collect coins, I have never forgot what prompted me to enter the hobby and that is the joy I get out of it.....finding silver and other old coins. oneguy and I are somewhat alike. I take finding some old coin each outing as a challenge. Does it always happen? of course not. Does it bother me? nope. I started a routine of detecting almost every early morning for 3-4 hours the day after I retired back in 2006 and have continued to do so to this day. And will continue to do so as long as I am healthy enough to do so. As a result, I am able to find a nice batch of old coins and other things annually. I enjoy posting some of my finds and some of the things I've learned in finding them. I personally enjoy seeing other hunters finds and post myself in hopes that others may enjoy some of mine. I don't think to much about numbers, other hunters, or mine. I just know I myself won't be finding anything if I don't get out and hunt. And on those such days, that's o k, too. HH jim tn

In any pursuit oriented Sport, Comraderie and Competition go hand in hand...the young guys learn skills and are inspired by the Masters who post....Humans are basically Hunter/Gatherers, ..this Forum is akin to a campfire where we come to share our hunts successes and observations and help each other get through this life....

The guys who target a specific quarry and replicate success day after day is a good thing...a guy has to be inspired by something to get up and get out...a guy has to have some sort of 'measurable' to judge his performance against to see if he is learning this art properly and can hold a candle, or needs to modify strategy or adopt new gear and skills...

One cool thing about this Sport, theres so many skill sub-sets for a guy to try to master, from meteorites to clad...beach sweeping to door knocking...WE all like hunting, and dream about the hunt and all that...cant help it, its in our DNA or we would all be Farmers growing a crop of corn or carrots and not reading this thread...the thing is the inspiration to get a guy up and out, and nothing does that better than following a Master Hunters posts who can do it consistently year round...I for one have learned a lot from y'all, I enjoy the campfire to see how you did today, and strive to attain that level..so keep it coming..!.

Good thing I'm a stone cold cladder!..Thats where the real fast money is me Mateys! You old silver dime hunting guys could NEVER knock down stinky clad like Me!. In fact, I bet I could buy your whole 20yr portfolio of silver finds with a few weeks of my totlot clad! So screw you and the hat you are wearing! :lmfao:

What did you expect? Theres always a good fight break out around a campfire if guys stay up long enough! Tell you what..I'll let you hit me in the head with a sock full of your years silver dimes if you let me hit you in the head with a sock full of a weeks worth of my zincolns!

Very well said, Elton.

Life always seems best when the final destination is an excuse for the journey as opposed to the other way around.

Competition is such a constant and important part of life in so many ways. Quite frankly, when I'm enjoying my hobby, I have no desire to compete with anybody... including myself.

The thrill of finding a silver coin and other keepers that have relatively little monetary value, I can't logically explain.

But the good people I've met, the interesting places I've been, the wonderful experiences I've had...all because of this great hobby... that's easy to understand.

The Only person I am in competition with is ME. I always want to find one item that is just a little bit nicer than what I have found in the past. A day that I dig up 8 or 10 dollars in clad along with the hand full of pennies is a very enjoyable day for me.

When I do find that extremely Rare (for me) silver coin it makes my entire month.

Detecting is the most enjoyable hobby that I have ever participated in.
