Silver Gettin' Combo!

To All You X-Terra 70 Fans,

Compared to you all, I'm a green horn with my X-Terra 70 but I think I found the magic recipe to finding silver coins. Obviously we begin with the X-Terra 70. Add one 18.75DD 5" x 10" coil, set your program to Patterns #2, set noise cancel, ground balance, and hunt! This morning, in a little more than two hours, I found seven quarters, three nickles, two dimes, one Canadian penny, a hunk of silver soder as big as a pinpong ball, a bar of aluminum, and a Susan B. Anthony Silver Dollar. Of course several pull tabs and other junk was thrown into the mix. Last week I found a Sacajawea Dollar but this is my first 'Susan'. If you haven't tried this combination on your X-Terra 70 ~ give it a try. What have you got to loose?

Very good hunt! I can not tell what years the 2 silver quarters were? The SBA is a great find and on my list, Beale.

Unfortunately none of the quarters were silver but, in three day hunting 2-3 hours each day, I have found $9.50 in quarters, $2.00 in dimes & nickles, a handfull of pennies, and one 'Sunan' silver dollar. I thought that was good for the six hours invested. Oh ... did I mention ... that the first day I used the 'standard' 7.5khz 9" coil w/Pattern #1 and couldn't find a thing? Changing coils to the 18.75DD 5" x 10" and using Patterns #2 made all the difference. So the majority of the coins were taken the second and third 2 hour days. The 18.75DD 5" x 10" coil & Patterns #2 made a belieaver out of me and proved to be a great combination.

I was wondering why you chose pattern 2? wont that notch out any gold items? I'll check my manual I'm not sure...I've been using pattern 1 with the stock coil and only use prospect with the eliptical coil but I'd like to try coinshooting with the 18.75 at some point. How does the target ID work using that coil? ross..^_^

Believe me I tried using the 9" 7khz standard coil in Patterns #1 but there were so many signals that the standard coil couldn't separate the targets. I also tried the same setup in AM but too many sounds. When I put the 18.75DD 5" x 10" coil on and chose Patterns #2, everything settled down and target separation was incredible. I wasn't hunting for gold ~ only silver so Patterns #2 worked well for me. Patterns #2 finds all silver coins, as well as clad and it's great on nickles. It would be hard to argue with the results. If you've got the 18.75DD 5" x 10" coil, give it a try. You may just be very surprised.

HI SS nice hunting!

I've been running with HF 5 x 10 DD in pattern 1 and you are right there are a LOT of targets and blanking to boot. I've considered running in 2 or 3 just to cut out some of the signals. I'm going bonkers and so many are just little pieces of farmer junk (and I mean little). That however tells me this machine will pick out some small gold when I get up north to prospect. I'm wondering though if running with more disc. aren't we loosing out on the items that are hidden underneeth or are we actually making up for that in more time on the move with the targets that are more appealing to you.

No doubt the type of ground and or site your hunting in would make a difference in which of the 3 Patterns you choose, if in fact you chose to hunt in a Patterns Mode at all. When I wrote the above mentioned article, my sole interest was in finding silver and clad coins and eliminate all the extraneous noises I had gotten in Patterns #1 and in AM Mode, so Pattern #2 was a good choice. If I were detecting at the beach, for instance, I probably wouldn't use Patterns #2. I may hunt in AM or Patterns #1. There have been a few times when I chose to detect in the Prospector Mode and dig everything! By choosing Patterns #2, I don't think I missed anything deeper. Occasionally I had gotten signals, on quarters, that turned out to be 8" - 10"! How deep do you want to dig? And I noticed too that I dug many different types of metals in Patterns #2 but the majority of the signals were silver, clad coins, and aluminum. I really like the 18.75DD 5" x 10" coil and, by using it, I won't be missing any gold providing, of course, I'm hunting in AM, Prospecting Mode, or Patterns #1. Does that answer your question Turnmaster?

Well I will be honest. I run pattern 1 99% of the time. Now I only have the stock coil. This past week I hunted 3 days in one spot. I found over $21.00 in change in about 8-9 hours if hunting. I know it differs from person to person, but my vote is for that and 3 tones, Beale.

I have a 5x10 18.75 dd and a 6in 18.75 MHz dd coil , my question is will hunting in pattern 2 with the 6 in 18.75 dd work as well in pattern 2 as the 5x10 did?

The best way to make that determination is to do a "head to head" comparison. Grid off an area and hunt it with one of the coils. Mark each target with a golf tee. Then go over the same area with the other coil and see if it hits more targets, fewer targets or just about the same. In other words, see how they compare in your neck of the woods. Different soils and different hunting styles will likely provide different results for each of us.

As to Patterns.......don't overestimate what a Pattern does. A Pattern is just the detector's way of remembering which notch segments are accepted and which ones are rejected. That way, when you turn your detector on next time, those settings are ready to go. Each of the Patterns can be adjusted to suit your hunting style. Some people like to hunt with the default settings and others like to tweak them a bit. To modify a Pattern, simply press either the + or - keypad until the TID displays the notch segment you want to adjust. Then press the accept/reject (checkmark on the newer versions) keypad to either allow that notch segment to provide an audio tone, or set it so it doesn't provide a tone response. Keep in mind that setting a notch to reject will cause targets with that "identity" to blank out the audio.

In my opinion, the major difference (in results) that you will find with the two coils you mention will be caused by the larger coil analyzing more soil at any one time. This could require you to have to use different NC, GB, Sens etc. settings. And, using a larger coil (compared to a smalller coil) could result in more target masking. Having a larger "footprint" results in having more targets under the coil at one time. If some of those targets are rejected targets, they will blank out the audio until center of the DD coil passes over them. In the world of coils, the smaller the diameter, the better it will separate targets. This is the main reason I hunt trashy areas with the 6-inch DD, use multiple tones and seldom use discrimination. I want to recognize everything that is under that coil at any one time.

The key is to find the combination of hardware and settings that work for you and keep swinging the coil. You'll find that the more good targets you find with any given detector/coil combination, the more confidence you have in it. And, the more confidence you have, the more you will hunt with that combination. And, the more you hunt, the more you will find. And the more you find, the more confidence you will have. And ........well...... you get the picture.

Amen Brother! My first day, in the 'New Area', I hunted with the standard coil and the barrage of sounds made it difficult, at best, to tell what was in the ground (very trashy area). The second day I went back over the 'Same Ground' with the DD 5" x 10" coil and I couldn't believe the difference! This coil separated all that was in the ground but to get rid of all the 'noise', I decided to use Patterns 2 and that made the area much more quiet than running in Patters 1. The only thing I didn't do, that you suggested, was to use golf tees for each signal but I'll consider that next time. The funny thing was that I had a package of 4" grill skewers in my detector box and could have used them but didn't think of it, at the time. Thanks Digger for the detailed explanation. I'm sure it will be a help to a multitude of others out there.

Happy Hunting Gals & Guys,

RANDY. understood
At this old farmhouse I have sporadically hunted there so many hits that it usually takes me about 5 minutes even to find a spot to GB. Part of that I chalk up to inexperience. After properly GB, I followed your procedure form another thread (I think it was yours), and the volume of targets becomes overwhelming near the end of my hunt. I have gone to the pattern 2 just for kicks to knock out some of the targets. I have worked with the stock CC and the HF 5 x 10 there. I end up going back over the same area in pattern 1 when I return and everywhere I hunted with the MF CC I have gone back over with the HF DD and found more, which I think were hidden by nails. The 5 x 10 DD does definitely separate better though (for me - so far). My coin count there so far is 80 or so coins, mostly pennies and the oldest clad was a 1965 dime and 4 wheats. I have hopes that I may find some older coins there and seem to be getting better results as I gain experience and time on the machine. I have only found two nickles there and a ton of gum wrappers. One nickle was on the sidewalk and I saw it so it don't count.

I've been begging Minelab to develop a small DD coil at 3 kHz. :rage: Can you imagine? The separation of a DD coil that analyzes half the soil (at one time) as your elliptical? And the target response on silver and copper that is provided by the lower frequency. Something to dream about, anyway. HH Randy

Hey Randy, beg them for a 6" DD 7.5 coil. that's the coil that I want and it well work on all Xterra's.
