Silver Found

Nancy-IL

Well-known member
I didn't find any silver coins but did come across this cute "sterling" horse pin about 5" deep. I was surprised that it wasn't all bent up. :clapping: Also found a few wheats with one being a 1909 without the VDB. Oh well, I'll take it any day! Hope you guys and gals are getting out to detect before the winter cold blast comes. Thanks for looking and HH, Nancy

NIce hunt, Nancy. Sounds like you had a great time outdoors. Congrats on the silver.:clapping:

Awesome, congrats on the silver. I see an organ reed and fowl(chicken, ect) leg band as well.
Is that a clay marble next to the silver horse? It doesn't have the white oxidation normally found on lead. I've accidently found a few of them in the plugs with my metal finds.

Thanks guys. It was a beautiful day to play outside and we took advantage of the exceptional warm weather for November.

Aaron, you're right about the reed and the bird tag. The round ball is just that...a round ball of metal. Not a clay marble.

Thanks! It took first place in the jewelry category at our club. It's got "Sterling" stamped on the backside of his head. HH, Nancy

Great find Nancy, thanks for sharing. I especially like the horse but the bird band is really a cool find too. I found a still ball that was approx 4" in diameter, it appeared to made of stainless still and it was shiny. It was a cool find for me but I had some little kids come up to me, their eyes sparkled with excitement and amazement as their eyes focused on this gigantic shiny looking marble. I couldn't help myself, I gave it to them and the joy of watching them run with excitement to show it to their family and friends what they had was worth more then finding it.

Mike, That is such a great story. I bet those kids loved that steel ball. Who knows, the lucky recipient might keep it for a lifetime and tell the story of how he came across it. So very cool! Plus the expressions on their faces is something you'll never forget. Priceless! Stories like this really warms my heart. I wonder what that big steel ball was from? Sure makes ya wonder.

Thanks for the compliments. Larry has gotten information on a bird band that he had found and it was quite interesting and it seems like they even sent him information about the bird. I've not found out anything about this one. HH and thanks again for the heartwarming story.

That's a handsome horse, Nancy! I'm curious . . . how do you organize years worth of finds . . . do you use display cases or zippy bags? Also, do you sell off scrap copper and brass from time to time. At a couple bucks a pound it would tend to add up and might help fund a new machine. Anybody else following this thread have any special strategies for this?

Thanks Pete. We card the "keeper" coins and put them in sleeves in each our own albums in a safe deposit box. I will write on the card where I found it and the date and if it's a valuable key date, I write the value of it on the card too. As items that are gold or silver, those too are in ring cases in the lock box. Larry takes the copper and brass to the recycle place every once in a while. He use to have a 5 gallon buckets in the back of his truck. One for brass and one for garbage so it was easy to clean our pouches out after detecting. Yes, it all adds up.

I too have used the card strategy in the past for keeper coins but I don't think I was selective enough because I ended up carding everything that wasn't clad or memorial cents. Nothing looks sadder than a toasted common date wheat cent in a 2x2!

Oh Pete, We have carded wheat cents if they're a key date that has more value.........say over a $1 or so. See, you're not the only one that cards wheat cents. HH, Nancy

Thanks Cliff, That would be so neat if you had it's brother. Let us know if you do. HH, Nancy
