Silver Finds for my first season with the 705 5x9 HF coil

I started out this year learning the X-terra 705 gold pack thinking that switching from my old detector may be a huge risk or a mistake. This was my second season detecting and had such a good time last year that I thought I will upgrade to something that will grow with me. I slowly realized that it was just a matter of time to get to know the machine and properly set it up. I am still learning and still have a hesitation to trust in what I am listening for. I will have to say that I am working a very heavy trash area which has so many pop tabs, metal bottle tops, and many other items of metallic origin. Let

Nice collection of finds.

I got my 705 mid-year, and started with the stock 7.5kHz concentric coil, then pruchased an 18.75kHz 10,5" DD thinking that it would be a killer on old homesites. After digging a small mountain of rusty steel bottlecaps, I finally learned the subtle difference in sound between them and the targets that I sought. Soon I got a 7.5kHz DD, and not long after a 3kHz concentric. Since then, I've rarely used the 18.75kHz coil at all. The lower frequency coils hit on coins (especially sliver) so much better than the 18.75, that I now only use the higher frequency coil for really nasty ground conditions.

Not until you have more than one coil will you truly realize the potential of the wonderful machine that you have. You may well find that you've glossed over some good targets places that you've already hunted. There is a place in the arsenal for all of the available coils (as well as a couple yet to be developed/released), so the more the merrier when it comes to versitility of the 705.

Maybe Santa can be persuaded to get you another coil for Christmas?

I know I put a 3 Khz coil on my list to Santa and I'm anxiously awaiting Christmas to see if I was naughty or nice!

I would love to have another coil but as Tiss be the season I won't be getting anything soon. The only reason I was able to upgrade my detector was because my grandmother requested that I do something that I like with the money she left me. She will be missed. She passed away earlier this year, so I dedicate my finds to her.

Hey, Old Longhair, Do you find that the DD HF 5x9 coil has shallower depth than the 3khz coil. I am contemplating on purchasing the 3khz but I would like to have a larger coil say a 10 inch at 3khz. The current coil I have seems to do great with coins. I can tell you if it is a quarter, dime or penny almost everytime using the 5x9 DD HF although I may be giving up depth, not sure? What consistent depths do you get with the 3khz and what type of places do you detect.

One of the other places I go is an old farm house that was in business in the early 1920's. I have found several wheats there 1922, 1919 ect and an Indian Head. There are a billion pieces of iron and some flakes of old metal sheets all over the place. I have mainly been detecting around the house area which was torn down at the first of the this year. This place used to be a pig farm and they would drive to the major city where i live and pick up trash to feed the hogs. There are tons of coffee cups, plates, spoons (which some of the resturants that have thier name on them don't even exhist anymore) This place has a lot of history and I know there should be some big coins waiting for me. One of the problems is there are cows in the pasture that I would like to detect. Being from mostly the city, and not being around the cows I am just a little hesitant. I was able to get the farmer who owns the land to walk with me into the pasture. This was the funniest part. I walk behind him a few feet and the cows just all looked up and started to walk towards him. They were hungry I guess and they thought it was feeding time. We left and I felt as if I could wak around in the pasture the next day. The next day comes, get out there, unlock the gate and then close it behind me. I walk about midway into the pasture and this large black cow looked around the corner and just starred at me. his ears pointed straight up and his tail is whipping around. He starts to walk toward me with two other cows. Now, I am thinking that this animal may be very stupid but he is 100x times my weight and size. I just turned tail and walked back out. I haven't been in there since then. :surrender: Oh well, I get brave one of these days.

Good hunting and good luck to everyone.

I can't help you with coil info but that cow story right there is funny:rofl:

Something very similar happened to me too. Once when we stopped one night to sleep in a secluded meadow in the mountains of Colorado, we woke up to some heavy sounds nearby and thinking it was bear, looked out of the tent and saw we were surrounded by cows. They too all started to walk towards us, we just pulled up our stakes and high-tailed it outta there. We still laugh about it today, 20 years later!

The HF DD coil that I have is the 10.5" round, which I would imagine will go a small amount deeper than the 9"x5" simply due to it size.

As far as which one goes deeper between the HF and LF? It depends on several factors, not the least of which would be mineralization. In average to mild conditions, the LF coil will see coins and relics deeper, but will be more likely to miss gold or fine jewelery (chain, earings, etc...).

The division of bin segments is wider at the top of the scale with an LF coil and narrower at the bottom. While the HF coil has wider bin segments at the lower values, and narrower at the high end. All of which (with all else being equal) lends the LF coil more accurate at identifying coin value range targets and deep relics, and the HF is better with gold and most other small targets, generally speaking. The MF coil has the most uniform bin segments throughout the range, so is a good one to have as an all purpose coil, or as a bridge between extreme conditions.

Since I'm personally more of a coin and relic hunter, I prefer the LF coil whenever I have conditions that allow it, but will use the MF coil if possible when the LF isn't appropriate. The HF is more for extreme minerization conditions for me, and lately I've been running into more places that I'll use it......but only because have to. If I was a prospector, or primarily a jewelery hunter, then the HF would be the logical choice.

NOW IF ONLY MINELAB WOULD CUT LOOSE A 3kHz DD COIL......!!!!!

Your story about the cows reminds me of a place I hunted a couple times........ being from farm country, domesticated animals usually don't bother me. In this one particular rural site, the owner had some horses out in the pasture. I started hunting the side hill with one eye on the horses and the other eye on my coil. After several minutes, I got a signal and dug up an old IH cent. Back detecting again, I forgot all about those horses. But apparently they had not forgotten about me. With me wandering around with my headphones on, in my own little "metal detecting world", I was suddenly pushed off balance by a big white horse. He was just being friendly, I suppose. But it sure startled me. For the next hour, that darned horse followed me every step I made. When I'd stop to confirm a target, he'd start with that nudging again. I pulled some grass and offered it to him. But he seemed to be more interested in just pestering me. I finally decided that it was going to be a long day, hunting along side my new four legged shadow. So I walked back to the truck and found another site. HH Randy

techdetect you need to get down to the south side of greenwood by me so we can hit the old farm that i got my moregan dollar at i would love to see more sliver come out set a date and let my know i got my sliver now some one need to get his

Will do, greenwoodhunter1. I have been quite busy lately and only get a couple of hours to hunt at a time on the weekend if I am lucky. The chill in the air is getting worse but I hope to get back out there in the next week or two weather permitting. I will give you a holler when I get the permission from my mom, I mean my wife..

Congrats on the gold rings, i still haven't found any gold yet.

ok get the permission then i will need to get permission

that's a big dog Digger to have following you around, mentioning dogs they seem to think detectors are a game you know chase the coil game i tell them when they come to play that its not a game! have been blindsided by a few dogs as well when down retrieving a target not a fun experience i might add  they must think i want to play when down at their level, its no fun when i don't hear them or see them coming
