the guy who supposedly buried all the silver coins we hunted for recently stopped at my coin hunting buddy's house monday with 3 silver dollars that he wanted to sell. all 3 coins had dirt on them like they could have been in the ground. he had 2 1922 peace dollars and a pretty 1897 0 morgan dollar. my buddy bought all 3 coins for 20.00 and the guy said he had more coins to sell. i'm thinking these might have been from the cache he says he buried in jars and alka seltzer bottles. i think he moved the cache years ago and is now gonna sell them a few at a time for beer and cigarette money. if he is sitting on the silver cache it might be possible to make him an offer for the whole thing and see what he does.
he might just sell them all for a price. i want to talk to the guy and ask some questions about the coins he supposedly buried close to 50 years ago............roger
garyf, i'm kinda the same way about the stolen coins myself. the lady the coins were stolen from is dead and has no family, so it would be hard to return them to the rightful owners. yes, the guy that sold the silver dollars is one of the guys who stole the coins from the lady. i'm just not sure what to do....i'd love to find the stash of coins with my detector, but i don't think they are where the guy says they are buried at. all of my information is from my buddy, so until i talk to the other guy to see what his story is i guess i'll wait and see what develops......roger
If I had found the coin stash and knew it belonged to her when she was living without knowing they were actually stolen...that would make a difference in my mind.
But receiving stolen property from the thief would make me feel ..well....like an accessory after the fact and just because she's dead with no family...really makes no difference....to me anyway.
I'm thinking you came here and put this up for some feedback on what to do and not just to tell a story. Far be it from me to tell anyone what is right or wrong for anyone but myself.
But
Even if it costs you some cash in the long run...wouldn't the feeling of doing what is right will make you feel far better than sitting there looking at some tainted metal.
And who's to say he wont come steal it back from you?
BLAHHHHH..............Okay that's enough of the deep stuff.
garyf, yeah, i wanted to see what others thought about this. being stolen bothers me alot, but then again the rightful owner is dead.... tough call. and mr. smith and mr. wesson says he wouldn't steal them back from me...................roger
barberbill, i guess anything is possible but i i'll just sit back and see how it unfolds. it would be much easier to just find a jar or two he missed in the ground.......roger
Why would the coins have dirt on them if thy were in a jar or something.
Even he could not be dumb enough to just dig a hole and toss them in.
Something fishy here
gmanlight, that thought crossed my mind too...why would the coins be dirty if buried in a jar? don't underestimate the guy, if he was dumb enough to steal the coins in the first place, i'm sure he could have dug a hole and dumped coins in. i still would like to hear his story about the whole deal. why would he tell us where he buried his loot at when he could recover it? it does seem fishy doesn't it? all i know for sure is he had 3 silver dollars that had the appearance of being buried that he wanted to sell. they may or may not have been part of the stolen coins. it just seemed odd for him to show up with 3 dirty coins..........roger
