Silver dimes / silver quarters (whats your ratio?)

texastreasures

New member
I just got my Whites M6 (which for coinshooting is similar to the MXT) a week ago and have already found the following:

- 3 silver Roosevelt dimes (1959,1960, 1962)
- 1 Mercury Dime (1940)
- 13 wheat pennies
- and more clad than I can fill two pockets with..

This hobby is quite addictive and I've had a blast. Just a few newbie questions..

1) How many silver dimes do you generally find for every silver quarter? (i'm surprised I haven't found any silver quarters yet!)
2) How do you distinguish nickels from pulltabs? I don't even dig for the nickels anymore since they are usually pulltabs!
3)Do you bother digging up the zinc pennies? They always come out so corroded, and are so common I don't bother with them!
4) In one park I was digging up the silver dimes at 2 to 3 inches, and just a few feet away I was pulling up modern clad at 4 inches - Explain that!
5) If I'm in a park where I'm finding wheat pennies, how likely is it that it's been cherry-picked for the silver coins with just the wheat pennies left?

I look forward to hearing your input and tips. Thanks!

I don't own an M-6 but have used em a few times.

1. Every area is different. I have had good quarter finds as well as no quarter finds. Just have to keep at it, sooner or later, they are out there.
2. I'll dig nickel signals and I'm used to digging pull tabs. Yes some days I get overwhelmed and tired then start to not dig the pull tab signals, but I'm always afraid of missing something good. On the M-6, if I can remember right, pinpoint the target. Then while in pinpoint, swing the coil away from the target, then re-swing the coil over the target except have the center of the coil not go directly over the target. Have the center miss being directly over the target by a few inches or so. Do this with a pull tab, then do this with a nickle, see if you can hear the difference between the two, then do it with a ring that has a similar reading as a tab. Then you know one of the reasons I normally dig up tabs, and differences one machine can do compared to other machines.
3. I'll dig a zinc every time. That's me
4. It happens. If any fill was brought in or any areas scrape. I have one area I dig clad up to a half foot deep, not far I find some silver 2-4 inches and no deeper.
5. Hard to say, I know some who set their detectors just for coins and avoid digging penny signals as much as possible. If I'm finding wheat then I'll sure keep detecting. Wheat is a good sign as far as I'm concerned. And if someone pounded the area for silver, who know what was missed by masking, person(s) detector/experience/patience etc., to many variables.

Thank you guys for the Questions, & advice. I just joined F.T.F moments ago, and you've already answered some questions i was bound to ask. Ive had my MXT about a year now, and im looking forward to the spring more than ever now. You'll be hearing from me fer sure.

With my MXT I always dig a VDI of i8 to 20. Most of the time it is a nickel. If the VDI is 21 to 24 it is a pull tab. The M6 should read in the same area for pull tabs or nickels.

Approximately 15 to 1...
20 on my vdi is 99% nickels, varying vdi are usually tabs..
I dig zinc as I have had a few Indians in that range..
Composition and compactness can vary greatly in a area causing different sink rates(1913 buffalo at 2") or possible it was in fill that was brought in..
If your finding wheats and no silver very possible it was cherry picked long ago.. This hobby been around awhile.. In that case I concentrate on dime and nickels tones... Gold and Buffalo's or a Shield or V makes my day.. Small dime targets are easy to miss..
Check the out of the way areas and right at the entrance and exits, edges of parking lot.. Never stop swinging till you climbing in your car.. Found a lot of keepers right at the car..
