Same design on both sides but no lettering to help identify what it was. Side view shows thickness at one spot. Guessing it was about 3/16 th inch thick before being crushed. Closeup of top shows "STERLING" and rim where sterling is suggests to me that there was a cover which could have been small or same size as bottom (if this is the bottom part) Curious as to what something so thin would contain. Any ideas?
 
It once had a lid and I think what you have is called a match safe for the older wooden matches. Google or Ebay

Hmmm, interesting theory GoGoGopher but the 2 holes are very small. Maybe a 22 calibur but it was found in a field that was plowed. Could have been gouged by plow or maybe, someone did decide to shoot it. Checked area around where this was found Aarong81 but no luck.
