Silver coins ?

This may be a stupid question but here it goes anyway, what are the dates that make coins silvers ? I found a 1941 and 46 nickel, and a 65 quarter. They do look different but what is the best way to tell if they have silver in them? I am just curious because I want to know when to get excited !!! Thanks to all, and good hunting.

The last year for the silver coins (dimes, quarters & halves) were made in 1964.

In the years 1965 through 1970, half dollars are 40% silver also.

Nickels were part silver through mid1942 through 1945 and are 40% silver (war nickels) . They will have a mint mark on the back also.

When a silver coins comes out of the ground, it will be the same brilliant color as the day it was lost. VERY pretty.

Hope that helps and HH, Nancy

Any time you dig a nickel, always look above Monticello. That is where the mint mark will be. It is a whole lot easier than trying to see the date. No mark = no war nickel. I think that's right.

lodihunter is correct. the mark should also be a P. i thought i had a 43' nickel and was cheching these things out earlier today. turns out mine is a 48'.i recommend any detectorist invest in what is called "The official BlueBook" the official guide book on U.S. coins. there is also the Red book. made by the same people and is almost the same book. put out yearly. if you aren't into coin collecting the Blue Book will serve you well. otherwise the Red Book has a little more info in it. both are very interesting reading on our coins histories. real eye openers. :surprised: at least i think so.

The silver war nickels have the S, P, or D mint mark. Not just the "P". HH, Nancy
