Well, I found my first silver coin in February and then another silver coin in March. This week has been very exciting. I have found a place to metal detect that is watched by the caretaker of the place. He gave me permission to swing my coil over his place, but he has to be there when I go and he kind of picks when and how long I can detect. The first time I went, I was supposed to have 1 hour to detect or until his son and daughter-in-law came to pick him up for dinner. Well, I started with my V3i and my 4x6 shooter coil and immediately was getting the zinc (crusties) hits that I ignored and even passed on some Memorials, but not all, as some silver will hit in the upper Memorial VDI range. Anyway, after about 10 minutes I had found several memorials and then I get a very good +86 hit and I dug it (did I mention the guy almost watches over you and I could only dig with my Lesche and only about a 2" diameter hole?), turns out to be my FIRST silver 1957D Quarter. Then I covered the hole and made it look like it had not been dug and moved on. I had just got a hit in the +79-+81 VDI range and the guy pops up on me and asked me if I could find a screw that came out of his lawnmower breather top. So, I picked up my stuff and went over to where he said it came out. He gave me about a 10 ft circle and within 5 minutes, we found it. Then I went back to my good hit hole that I had started. I dug the little hole (we are in a VERY dry West Texas environment where you cannot take a plug, even when you try, the dirt explodes when you try to pull out a plug. Anyway, I made the hole, stuck in my pinpointer and verified that the target was still there, worked a bit more with the Lesche and finally popped out what I thought was a dime....but no, it was a Silver golf ball marker like you use to mark your ball on the green. It was larger than a dime and just about the same size as a penny. Well just about the time I covered the hole, the guy's son pulls up, so I have to leave. I really appreciate his letting me detect.....but, with his son coming early and finding the screw for him, I only got 25 minutes to hunt. However, I did find my Silver Quarter, silver token, 6 memorials and a crustie.
The next day, he lets me come back and says I can hunt for 2 hours. I was in heaven, after finding silver the previous day. Well, as it turned out, I only got about 70 minutes,..............but, I found 3 Rosie silver dimes, 3 wheats, 2 quarters and 3 dimes that were so close to being silver years that it hurt and a bunch of memorials and crusties. Oh, and the 3rd picture is a little charm that I found at my normal "schoolyard box" type hunt. I though it was just a junker, threw it in my bag and when I got home, I put my reading glasses on AND a magnifying glass and it had the wonderful .925 on the back. It looked more gold than silver, though, so I took my gold test kit and discovered it was 10K plated over the .925 silver.
Thank God for the good people in this world that will still allow metal detector's like myself and my buddies to hunt. Without these good natured people, we would not have any places to hunt. I have to hunt at his discretion, but hey, it is his place and I am grateful that he lets me hunt at all, he could have said no to start with. He has told me I can come back next week, and I am anxious to find that elusive half-dollar, Mercury Dime, Barber dime or whatever decides to show itself to my coil. It is really fun to find any of these coins or jewelry that was lost 50-100 years ago.
