Silver and gold

jim tn

Well-known member
I have only found 4 silver coins thus far for the new year, but my F 75 is sniffing out some decent jewelry finds so far from among the trash. I have recovered 3 925 marked silver rings and 1 sterling silver band, 1 sterling book page marker, (kinda neat) marked S Kirk & Son (interesting history) and 1 10k gold nugget ring found near a tot lot. All the silver items hit in the 70's and the 10k ring read 33, but sounded to good not to dig. It had probably been there a little while as it was about 4-5" deep. That was my first gold for a while. I found 9 gold rings the first fourteen months with my 75, all from the turf, then I hit a dry spell. I guess I had better start listening a little better. HH everyone. jim tn

Jim when hunting in a field, or old site..what would you say the average depth is on your deepest coin finds ?.

probably the 5-7" range, but far more often then not, it will vary from site to site. One very old park here that I frequent has been hunted hard since the 70's and most old coin recoveries now are 7" deep and more, or masked by trash. Another spot that I love to hunt was a military housing complex from the early 40's to 1985, when it was shut down and the housing demolished. All my silver recoveries from this site (a little over 200 with the F 75) ranged from depths of 3" to as deep as 10-12". Some initial bulldozing took place, which accounts for the wide depth recovery range. HH jim tn

More often then not, my setup is de, disc.6, sen. 85-90 and 3h and 4h tones. I do use settings of disc. 4 to 0 and 1 tone a fair bit as well. My gb here in W.Tn usually is in the mid 60's to low 70's. HH jim tn

thanks jim!
i have very limited time on mine since new,and when i get my s**t together, will be hunting the same sites as you here in new england, with maybe a farm field thrown in for s**ts and giggles!..much obliged for the running tip!

Have you considered the All metal Motion mode at all ?
Excellent mode to work in. You have to watch your screen more, but its no problem . Dig nothing under 18 unless of course you want to find Iron.
.........High end 85-99 is usually Big iron muscling in .

Depending on the site, I do use a/m on occasion, Jeb. In fact, I use the je mode a fair amount of time, too. I really like using de and 3 and 4h tones, though, as I listen for the high tones and high tone tics and then work to get a repeatable high tone and vid reading. Tone, however, is the determining factor for me to dig. As I mentioned, I use mono tone, too, but I like hearing everything under the coil and not having to watch the screen with every beep. 6 disc. is the most disc. I ever use and quite often, if I have hunted a stretch of ground with 6 disc. I'll lower the disc. to 0 for rehunting that stretch. I may hunt a stretch with the DD stock coil and then go back over it with the smaller coil, as well. The small coil is a great little coil and it gets good depth. I have dug quite a few targets with it well past 7". HH jim tn

thanks for the input jim!..i am john, and when i purcheased mine last year i got out one time and ONLY for a few minutes at a 1640's common that has been "beat" to death by justa bout every detector made!..dont think its been "hit" by the 75 though!..i will know when i get there gain in the spring!..i have the 6" coil bit it hasn't even been on the detector yet!..bben hunting for about 30 years, but NOT with the 75 ,of course so i gotta tell ya with the new digital technology,it IS the first day of school all over again!..i got the 75 because i figured with the fast processor, and the d d coil,i can get myself thru and around the 300 years of trash that seems to permeate just about any and every "old" site here!..from all the posts i have read,it appears i have made the "correct" choice!..have to try the je mode after i get used to "factory" settings first!..will attempt to keep it stable and (e.m.i) to a minimum!

regards!

I crawled with mine right off in factor presets and that is the way to start I firmly believe. I am not sure there is actually a bad setup for the F75. Some, of course, just work a little better then others, depending on the site, age of the site and the type of hunting one is doing. Good luck when you are able to get out with your's. HH jim tn

thanks jim!
i have read so many posts, and it appears to be a love/hate relationship with this one!..definately gonna hang with it though, because of the financial commitment, and the fact that i have been at this a long time, and ya HAVE to learn the detector if you want to do well!..there is just simply NO other way!...i will run it in "factory" until i get used to it's "language"..as mentioned before ,will shoot for the most "stable" "gain"..thanks for the tips jim!
