Silver and auto ground balance

Howard Snell

New member
I got an old park that I'm scoping out. Now from what I read for deep silver I auto ground balance then manually adjust the ground balance a negative ten notches.
Does this sound correct?

I relize I'm giving up gold signals by doing this however I may do a secound pass on a positive ten notches for gold or deep gold targets.

What do you guys think of this strategy?

I think that one of the strengths of the AT Pro is that you can configure it in different ways for different situations, and it's like a totally different detector. I've been running mostly in Pro Zero mode and backing the ground balance off about 10 points as you mention, and it runs HOT!! Yesterday, I found an outcropping with a lot of Iron and Quartz that I think might produce some nuggets, so I did the reverse and got some promising sounding 'peeps' within the hot iron. It was at the end of a long, hot day, so I made a note of the area to spend some time on next trip out that way.

I hunt a lot of trashy areas, and am thinking about giving them a once over with most all the low range discriminated out (I've already covered them in Pro-Zero mode), just to see if there's some silver goodness hiding among the trash that my poor, overwhelmed ears missed. Nice to have options. (and I'm overdue for a 5x8 and sniper coil, still saving my pennies)

Please post your results.

yes, i do this a lot and have found a lot of silver already this year. as stated above, if you are in a super trashy area, man, your ears will get tired fast as it runs really hot.

but, if you are in a spot that doesnt have a lot of trash, it's like brights on a car. things just really pop out of the ground with those settings. i will sometimes back the grounding down more than that if i can get away with it. you will know you've gone too far if you get a lot of falsing on your swings or just plain chatter. pennies also really come alive...basically higher end of the spectrum. and aluminum cans will blow your ears off.

i did this on a place i had pounded and found a really deep merc and 1859 indian head. best of luck!
