Silver #104 finally takes me abroad.:ausflag:

It took me to silver #104 to get my first foreign silver, a 1943 three pence from Down Under. 5" deep, hit around 68-71 with the F75 in DE mode.

The others are silvers #101-103, a 43 quarter and a couple rosies.

I've been using lemon juice on silver lately, and I'm liking it on silver better than other methods I've tried when more than just a soak and dishwashing soap is called for.

The 61 dime had some unsightly stains that mostly came off with the lemon, while leaving the natural toning on the coin.

Marcomo, congrats on the 1943 3d. It's made of sterling silver (92.5%), and looks to be in great condition, possibly dropped by one of our blokes over there during WWII. Then again, maybe not. Great silver finds all round. HH

I cant see from the photo, but if it has a mint mark "S" or "D", then it was minted in San Franscisco or Denver.

Thanks Furious, and that's interesting to know. I didn't see any sign of a mintmark, if there was one do you know where it would be?

So the Denver and SF mints produced Aussie coins?

Was that just during WWII?

How it got in the yard where I found it is anyone's guess. The house where it was found (along with the 43 quarter and 53 dime) was built in 1958, before that it was farmland.

Hi Marcomo,
Yes some of our 1942, 1943 and 1944 coins were minted in USA....the mintmark would be under the date....I couldn't see one, and your photo is pretty good, wyhich would mean that it was minted in Melbourne (a dinkum Aussie:)), it could be worth about $10 (AUD).
