Silly Mistake

I was using my brand new Vaquero yesterday morning and it started acting up within the first hour or so. I have about 10 hours on the detector and after checking everything I could think of, I came to the conclusion that I had a bad coil. I was going to call the factory this morning, but I live in Ohio and the factory is several hours behind on the time. After rechecking the detector this am, I was sure it had a bad coil. Before sending it back, I decided to check the battery and it showed 16 miliamps. A new one checked in at 26. I put a new battery in and the detector was perfect. I had neglected to check the battery because I had so few hours on the detector. I learned my lesson. Always check the obvious and don't assume that a battery is in good shape even when it is nearly new. Funny thing to add. I always carry a spare in my pouch and when I dragged this brand new, unused, in the package battery out, it had an expiration date of 2007. I had failed to rotate my stock and when I checked it on my tester, it was completely DEAD! It might have been 15 plus years old.

I had the same thing happen to me. My TigerShark can go a whole season on the same batteries but the Vaquero likes to eat them up. Glad it wasn't the coil.

I had a detector go beserk due to a very low battery. Put in another and it worked for a short while then did it all over again. Upon testing, the replacement battery was near death as well.

That's why you listen for the beeps when it starts up.
7-8 beeps new, less beeps as the battery drains.

Has anyone used the lithium 9 volts?
I tried them. They last for ever, but, they are hard to get in. They are a fuzz bigger than the regular. I wont use them again. I dont want to break anything for a little more time... KEM

Thanks. A Duracell lasts for a long time in my silver and conquistador. Its a pretty tight fit as is with the alkalines.

Although a Tesoro forum and Tesoro detectors in mention, let me assure you, battery problems are not confined purely to Tesoro machines. Aside from user error, Duracell, though, have been the most reliable and longest lasting for me. HH jim tn

That was my only complaint about the Vaquero. It ate through batteries. By contrast, I can go about 40 hours on batteries in my Deleon. 10-12 was all I could get with the Vaquero. And yes, it goes wonky when the battery is low.
