Silent search

Does the 1236 x2 really need a 5 inch coil when it already has silent search mode when you hunt trashy areas ? I hit the silent search and not a tab is heard all day just coins including some bottle caps oh well.

The idea behind silent search isn't about a big coil or a small coil. Silent search just kills the threshold running tone, if your used to detectors that have a running tone then that's most likely the way you would run it, if your one that don't like the noise then you can choose "Silent Search"

The idea behind the big and small coils is if the area is littered with metal objects then with the larger coil covering more ground means that you can have a lot of multiple metal targets under the coil at one time. When this happens it puts more possible targets with in the detection field of the coil and more for the circuits to process at the same time. Meaning while its trying to discriminate the iron out (reject) its also trying to except any possible good targets. When this happens the operator will also get mixed signals, if the objects are really close together and a mix of good and bad the audio report will most likely be interpreted as a bad target and just passed up.

With a smaller target cover a smaller patch of area means that fewer objects will be under the coil and clearing up the reported signal. The idea with the small coil to be able to move in between the junk and be able to better pick out the keeper targets.

Yes, you can just run the large coil and find the easier to find targets, but if the trash is packed in really close you will be leaving maybe?? more good targets than you found.

There is a good side to hunting a trashier area with a large coil, its leaves the next person that is using a small coil a really good place to hunt! :)
