Signal I D change depth

Todd(so.Wi.)

I wanted to get some thoughts on a phenomenon I've noticed. Some of the deep wheatbacks I locate ID as iron, and have an iron like tone but with that classic round shaped target warble to them. Then when I dig them out, they sound like they should.

What in the werld is a-goin' on?

Todd,

I wouldn't call it an iron tone. But, I have experience the lower toned coins. Most of those kind of coin finds sound like a round pulltab to me with a slight difference in the tone. Most of places I have that happen it's where other detectors don't seem to do that great. Mineralization is part of it but I have had that happen in places that the mineralization isn't that high. You're well on your way to understanding the Explorer when you start knowing to dig those kinds of hits. There is a few hits that are beyond that type of hit that are even more deep and iffy but are coins. That's the next step... :)

Todd,

Once you get beyond a certain depth- how deep depends on ground mineralization- all signals sound like iron. No detector can tall the difference between different metals. The detector can still pick up the target that deep but cannot ID it correctly.

I've heard of some people digging every iron signal and getting coins, but in most locations this simply would be impossible. Way too many iron targets to clean out.

Most "iffy" signals are caused by good targets buried close to junk targets, but some "iffy" signals are caused by the target being deep enough that it is just on the borderline of being identifiable by your machine. Sometimes cranking the sens or going to a larger coil can make these signals sound good. Wet ground and short grass also help.

Sounds like Ric gave you a little help on hearing these.

Thanks Chris. Yes Ric did help me out quite a bit. I feel more confident now, but I'm crippled without a probe. Hopefully things will be different in a week or two.

I like your suggestions about why the signal changes thanks again for your input!

That's one of those things that it's hard to explain thru a message. I only run into a couple of those kinds of hits a month. Those kind of hits are barely hitting BUT you can cross them NS EW. They act alot like iron but have some other tones mixed in but the other tones are really subdued. When I am swinging over them they don't always repeat with every swing. I usually find those kind of hits in areas where I find the targets that are pushing into coins sounding lower like pulltabs. It doesn't happen in every area I hunt because the mineralization varies alot in my area. It kinda like the lower coin tones... once you hear one you'll have a good idea of what you're looking for. I stumbled up on those deeper coins in an area that had been pounded. I was looking for any repeatable signals. Hopefully I helped you some... :)
