Sidewalk Tearout and a Rental House

Had to fly to Memphis over the weekend for a death in the family, and when I had the chance I was able to get out three different times to hunt some old ground. It was a good distraction from reality, even if it was for only 2-3 hours each hunt...and finding silver will always put a smile on my face!

First hunt was at a rental house not far from where I lived in 2013. 4 kHz proved to be too chatty, so I ended up using 8 and 12kHz for the majority of the time. First signal at the rental was a 1925 Wheat, but most of what I found there were shallow modern coins. Managed two Mercury dimes, both dated 1943 - one was only 2" deep while the other was about 5" down. Got rained out after two hours but I was very happy to get silver and a few older coins including a toasty 1955 nickel.

I also hunted an old corner lot with Tabman for about an hour before having to meet relatives for lunch. He pulled a 1903 Indian cent but the trash and EMI were working together to make hunting very difficult at this place. Dug a few more modern coins and lots of aluminum before leaving.

The next day I learned of a church getting renovated from the ground up - and I just happened to be present when the crew was ripping out crepe myrtles with a backhoe. This church and school were built in the early 1950s, and apparently it wasn't hunted much if at all. I talked to the foreman and he was most interested to see what I could find, but I had to steer clear of the crew. Dug a war nickel almost right off the bat, and then two Rosies came from the same hole!!! Everything was shallow and 4" or less, the silver dimes kept popping up along with occasional Wheats. Detected underneath where a crepe myrtle was freshly pulled from the ground...got a surface signal and then saw a silver rim poking out of the dirt!

I dug 9 silver coins at the church, and my only regret was having to fly back to Colorado on the same day. I set up the Deus with Reactivity 2.5 Silencer 0 Sens 80 and was digging everything that sounded off. I hate detecting on a time crunch, but it proved to be worth the effort! Dad was with me using his AT Pro and managed three rings, one sterling, a Marlboro lighter, and a handful of modern coins. I told him to get back to the church ASAP and find the silver we didn't get time to dig before fill dirt was brought in. I hope he makes it back there in time because I feel those other coins will be lost for many years if the opportunity isn't seized at once!

Sorry for your loss but admiring your finds.

Looks like you found the silver lining!
