:minelab::unsure:when are we ever going to get the new 5-6" coil for the x-terras?all we get is the run-around!:ranting:we need a coil to work trashy coin areas!!i have a new x-70 and really need this coil.the forums are full blokes looking for this coil!how much longer??

Hi,

You know, I can't recall ever seeing a totally new detector platform supplied with so many coils, so quickly, from any manufacturer. Minelab has done an exemplary job in bringing out coils in short order.

I also want a small coil, but I think we have to keep this in perspective. Many owners of some detectors have waited many years for a small coil for their machine, and some never got them at all. One favorite machine I had took over 10 years to get a small coil out! Everything I have heard indicates there will be a small coil for the X-Terra by spring. While this may seem like a long time, it actually is not if you look at what others have done on totally new units. Not ones that have pre-existing coils developed for older models.

That's all very well Steve, but the X-Terra coils are propietry and who's to say the next 'issue' from ML will continue with this new technology?

I'm not sure, because the take-up numbers of the X-Terra in Oz are small, if third-party coils can be made with this technology. What chance coiltek will make a small coil for this range of machine?

It is the one component they should have addressed from day-one.

PS: I have found an Oz source for the range of coils you have in the US. From what I can see, nobody is willing to carry stock.

Hi lemons,

Well, all I can say is it would be odd to spend so much money on a line of accessory coils unless they plan to leverage it for some time. Much as White's has done with the DFX/MXT/M6 coils.

I'm starting to think that Minelab is doing better in the US than in Oz. Every time a new Minelab unit comes out, the Australians bash away and everybody sticks with their old SD 2100 or whatever. While here in the US more of us seem to get excited and run out and get the latest and greatest. Just got my GPX-4000 yesterday, and my hunting buddy called up and told me to sell his GP 3500 and to hold a GPX for him. It is looking like a hot seller here.

I would not be surprised if the X-Terra is not getting much support in Oz either. But compared to other manufacturers units all released about a year ago, I'd say it was a winner here.

Maybe Australians are just more practical than us starry-eyed dreamers here in the US?

Anyway, I'm not being an apologist on the small coil deal for Minelab. I just do not think they have got the credit they deserve for introducing as many coils as they have so quickly. If they had started with small coils people would be complaining about a lack of larger coils.

Oh well, I'm too infatuated with my new GPX-4000 to care anyway...

Last note, lemons, my friend. Be happy, as it is spring down under. Here in Alaska the snow flurries are starting, and I'm about to be froze out of detecting for 6 months. I've got a new toy, but no real way to use it until May!

All you have said is correct Steve.
Fact is: the Australian market place remains a drop in the bucket for ML. The real market is the US and UK with a fair number going to the rest of the world. If ML didn't have these export links we would still be banging around with groundhogs.

Good luck with the long sleep Steve, it's just warming up here and in the west. . . the bush will be empty. Way too hot unless your a local and can dive into an air-conditioned room with a coldie.

Hi all...

Personally I think Minelab should release/sell the VFLEX technology to third party coil makers such as Coiltek or Sunray. Economies of scale dictate that these manufacturers are better equipped with dealing with the smaller coil market and heck they are much more successful in the this area anyway.
