I was out metal detecting in an upper class neighbor community park today and the cops were call on me (1st time). Today was a rainy day here in California, I was detecting a local community park which I've been to a few times and I know it's got lots of coins (just right on the surface cover by the grass). Anyway I don't know where this guy came out from because there was no one there. He approached me and ask what I was doing and what was I looking for. I told him just coins. He replied OH and left. (Note that I don't have a digger just a probe, pin pointer, and screw driver). No sooner after he left, the cops show up and said that someone had called in and said that I was tearing up the park. Cop follow me around for a little bit, I showed him how I retrieve the coins with no damage to the grass after that he said it's was probably best if I leave other wise someone will call the cops again. He said " I know your not doing anything wrong but just leave" Has this ever happen to anyone of you MD guys out there.

To bad you got ratted on by some jealous no brainer.
It has happen to me a few times usually say looking for a wedding
ring friend lost here. It has great sentimental value.
I'd go back there early morning or late evening and stay away in the daytime

Great idea! I have used that line before. Kind of makes you go from a suspicious looking character to a hero.:clapping:

He probably thought he was doing his civic duty or something or the park just belonged to him. You never know with people like that.
I like Joel's idea myself.

If you are in this hobby long enough, it is bound to happen at some point. Just move on and come back in a week or so...Hopefully the IDIOT will be long gone...If you stay and the cops are called again, they have no choice but to take action.

HH,

Yupper. Do as they say and go back another day. That by the way is how I got into metal detecting. Saw a guy swinging what i thought was a stick in the park on my patrol district.......a digaholic and life long friend was found. Bought an old Garrett off him. Gordon mac is now deceased...gud bouy.

People calling the police - it does happen occasionally. It's worse when all you have found is junk and you got all the hassle which no one needs. I have had the cops out to me twice in 20 odd years , others I know who detect have had the cops out too.
It's not common but it does happen now and again. I know some who detect at night have had the detectors confiscated here in the uk Night Hawks they are known as. There are plenty about too.

Just hang around the Park and see if he returns with a Dog. maybe with out a litter crap bag. I was at my Old Location today and there was 2 Bags of S_ _ _ thrown up against a tree. On the Beach they just throw the Bags in the Dune.

I was told I'm digging up the beach and have no right too and anything I find belongs to the county parks office. Is this a JOKE or was this guy a ????????
This happens a lot more now.

I just tried a worthless trashed beach last Saturday. I can't believe how much tinfoil there was and especially how much dog shit was scattered all over the beach. The summer visitors will be very happy to lay their beach towels on that stuff...
I only found three coins, a bit away from the beach.

Yes I have had that happen but I have not thought of using that line. Thanks for the tip, It would sure change a persons paradigm wouldn't it?
