As a newbie to MD'ng I would like to see the tools, accessories and different stuff everyone use in our hobby.

Mr. T:

First of all, welcome to the forum.

There have been numerous posts in the past regarding this, but I have not seen one in a while, so it is a good refresher. I have a carload of accessories, but here are the basics that I do not go without.

First of all, I have 3 coils for my Garrett CXIII. I usually stick with the standard 8.5" coil, but I also have a 12.5" Deep Seeker for areas where there the trash is minimum, and I have the room to swing it. The 4.5" is great for very trashy areas, but it doesn't cover as much ground. I also carry a pin-pointer. I am currently using a White's Bullseye, which I am very unhappy with. I usually carry a small digging trowel, but I also have a small shovel for areas where it is required. I have a probe, which I use in parks or on manicured lawn where digging is a problem, but most of my digging is in wooded areas. I also wear gloves to protect my hands fro sharp objects and to prevent (with some success)poison ivy

Those are my basic accessories, but here are a few "also recommended" accessories:

BOTTLED WATER: If you are like me, you can get so focused that you forget to hydrate yourself. On a good hunt, I have gotten lightheaded before I realized I was dehydrated.

FIRST AID: Carry a simple kit "just in case".

CELL PHONE: Don't leave home without it.

GPS RECEIVER: Especially important if you are hunting off the beaten track. I use a simple Garmin eTrex, which retails for under $100.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: Always let someone know where you will be detecting, especially if it is off the beaten path. I hunt in places that are many miles from the nearest road with no cell service.

I hope this helps!

Good Hunting,
Neil

Thanks Neil

As Overev said that is very helpful to us newbies. I thank you for the welcome. I hope this forum is not a click. I was very surprised to only get one response. I thank you again for the information.

Welcome to this forum from a Central Coast detectorist. Hope to see some of your finds posted. Basically I use a long, thick screwdriver, a Vibra-probe and a heavy duty digging trowel.:super:

Hummm, don't have a camera to take a pix of the
"holster" I use for tools..But I have a scanner
pix of my coin probes. These I actually use more
than any other tool. I rarely use "diggers". I use
the probes and pop the object up out of the dirt
most the time. Makes much less of a hole, and usually
you can't even tell I dug a coin out.
Where with the diggers...I've ended up with some
ugly holes... You have to be careful with those..
Anyway, my first coin probe was a pushrod from an
engine. "ford 300 six to be exact". But then I got
fancier and decided to make one from a screwdriver.
I ground the tip down as round and smooth as I could
get it, and then further buffed it down to get it
real smooth. These usually don't mar a coin unless
you really get carried away.. Even then, the damage
is likely to be much less than with a sharp edged
digger.
I have a little belt holster that I keep the stuff in..
The probes, one short digger, a thin blade shovel
with a 1 ft handle.. Throw in a shop rag, and thats about
it as far as my digging tools.. The blue handle probe
probably pops up 95% of everything I dig up.. I'll
only whip out a digger as a last resort if something is
really deep or big.

Thank NM always good to find out what other people use. I have both a digger & a metal prob. I's a left over from my kite days. It's a metal shat epoxied to an Orange golf ball about 12" long.
