Shoulder pain?

DJB50156

Hello,
I have been detecting for a little more than a month now. I'm a lefty so I swing the maching with that arm. No problems on that side. I have a Garrett probe
that I holster on my right side. To clear the probe all of the way out of the holster I have to lift it quite high. A couple of days ago I started having pain in
the right shoulder. Now the pain is so bad I can't lift the probe out. I am thinking that the repetitive, probably thousands, lifts of the probe are causing this.
Anyone ever had this problem or heard of this?
BTW I'm 54 yrs. old. Have also have moved the probe to the left side. Don't want to stop hunting. :)
Thanks, Dan.

Hi Dan------I have the holster of my Garrett Pro pointer "mounted" on the side of my Jimmy Sierra finds bag.--I have the finds bag on its own belt which hangs in front of me (by my stomach).---This arrangement works great as everything is out of the way from your swing etc. and the Pro Pointer is LOWER in it's sheath than if it was on your pants belt.-----I really like this setup but I can't even take credit for it---my wife figured it out (women are smart)! ----You might try something like this & see if it helps you.------BTW, I'm 71 & now arm pain from this arrangement! ------Del

I read on here about "glucosamine" (bad spelling) it is ajoint aid, that is supposed to help control pain. You may have to ease up for a few days. Check the net for this product.

Go see Dr. Feelgood!

OHHHHHKEEE DOEKEEE Julien!!!----Hey, by the way---how's YOUR aches doin??----Sent my book out yet? (no hurry).---------Del

Thanks all. I hunted today and didn't even use the holster. I just held the probe in my right hand with my digging tool. Seems to work.
Tha pain seems to be easing, but it's only been a couple of days.
Dan.

Sounds like the good ole' days when we found a sport we liked.....like archery, bowling, tennis, heck I even sored up my elbow just playing ping-pong once (thought I had broke something, but had just done to much to quick) and just over did it, ohhh mama would say "just give it some time and it will feel better"! I hope you can get some relief, and good luck 'huntin'.

twoscoots------You have (had) what is known as "ping pong elbow", a little less pronounced but closely related to "tennis elbow"!!!----Seriously, man I sympathize with you (or anyone) that has elbow problems.---I've got both my elbows messed up & have had for years (from pulling "tons" of lumber in lumber mills).---One Dr. told me I had bad "tennis elbow" problems without even being a tennis player. :)----They had me on blood thinners & some other stuff that did absolutely NO GOOD.----Finally I said "nuts with it" & just toughed it out.-----I still got it but it's a lot better now that I'm retired & can play all the time instead of work all the time.----Doesn't bother me when I'm swinging my 'tector or pulling out my pinpointer & that's all that counts, right? --------Del

I think I may have strained one of my rotator cuff tendons or muscles. Am sure a little rest will take care of it.
It rained yesterday, today, and is raining now.....so have not been detecting. I don't like to dig in the mud.
I guess tomorrow is out also. Forecast is for more thunderstorms. Hearing thunder as I type. Windows are
rattling.
HH......Dan.

Hope you feel better soon, hate to think you would have to learn to swing, dig, probe, grab treasure, and jump up and down with just one side of your body! Chase:chase: BS

Do you set your detector down when you use your pinpointer? If so, what I do is push it up out the holster from the bottom and grab it lower on the rod when it comes out.

Give it a try, that should help you.

Yes I set down the detector before getting the probe out. The problem was that I didn't pull the probe out until I was already on my knee. That made me have to
lift my arm and shoulder even higher. I did think of pushing it up and out of it's holster after I got this problem. Live and learn. Guess I should sue Garrett. :)
It is getting better, day by day. I still hunt, but keep the probe in the lower pocket of my trash pouch.
Dan.

I would try pushing it up from the bottom. I have had 3 shoulder surgeries and I wouldn't be able to keep pulling it out that way. I guess after a time you just learn to adapt.

Now I don't even think about it, it's automatic.

My shoulders are pretty worn after 30+ years surfing and swinging a detector doesn't help either. I do the same thing when I detect as when I surf and that is to take a couple advil before you start. That gets the stuff into the blood stream before the inflammation starts. Try it , makes a big difference for me.

I feel you have a nerve or muscle problem from making an unusual movement...Time to change the position or change the motion to allow recovery..

Gosh I hope you don't have a tennis elbow type injury in your shoulder as it took a year for a tennis elbow problem to go away( shooting a long bow was the culprit and was 50 years ago) and still remember the pain...Perhaps a doctor who deals with sports injuries could help you or at least lessen the problem until it heals..

Hopefully your shoulder pain will get better as time goes on. I had the exact same pain (Did a job that required about 3 weeks of brutal overhead work.) and it took me 7 months to bounce back. After the initial "heal" (all 7 months!), normal exercise fixed it quick. Same held true for torn meniscus in both knees. (Still not 100% there but at least the muscles have mostly strengthened to compensate.)

Probably the saving grace is my job turned white collar(ish) and it has given my body a break TO heal. At 50,I'm not going to count chickens yet but so far so good. Hopefully, limiting yourself for a while to heal, and then some good exercise will do the same for you.

So good to be not diggin' in pain again! Good luck!
