Should I use Iron Mask for Gold Ring?

Hello everyone,
My father in law lost a ring he won for insurance sales 20 or so years ago, and I didn't know if I would do better at finding it in the Iron Mask setting. Their backyard is pretty trashy, I guess it use to be the location of an old butcher shop way back when. I searched a little over the weekend, but found a lot of trash. It's solid gold, and the size of a class ring. I plan to use my 5x10 for the 1st time.
Thanks in advance

Unless you believe that this ring is very deep I would not use Prospecting mode. A man's "class" sized ring should be at Nickel ID and above. Grid the area & do a methodical search if you're serious about finding it.

a gold ring the size of a men's class ring will likely register in the 30's on your X-70 TID. This is, of course, dependent on the size, composition and depth. But generally speaking, a gold ring (10 - 14 K), the size of a class ring, that was only lost in a private yard 20 years ago, should be within the first 4 inches of soil, and register a solid hit in the mid to upper 30's. If it were me, I'd set my X-70 up in the all metal mode with multiple tones, and dig all the consistent signals that read above a 24. JMHO Good luck in your hunt. HH Randy

Thanks guys. I will do what you said. I'll post a pic if I find it (if the ice storm ever stops)
Thanks

When i found mine i used coin relic mode and included all the notches from 6 up if the ring is fairly solid u may well get a double signal but very solid and distinctive.

The most important thing you need is a 'for sure' idea where it was lost. Knowledge of any ground disturbance or activity during the 20

Wow Monte,
Thanks for the in depth information. I really appreciate it. He is not exactly sure if he lost it in the backyard or not, so that leaves me with an uphill battle. Hopefully I will get some dumb luck, and locate it. Thanks to everybody for helping.

here is the link to a post I made a couple years ago, concerning TID or some rings I've found. As you can see by the charts, they vary by size, shape and content.
