Should I sell my Sovereign GT?

The new price increase got me thinking if I should sell my GT. I own 3 detectors. Goldmaxx Power, T2 SE and the GT. I got the GT because I heard it was deep, and thought it would be great hunting the woods and pasture. But since I bought the T2 SE and it has the boost and cache modes, I am beginning to think that I don't really need the GT. I never hunt on the beach, more interested in old coins not jewelry, and although the GT is deep I am not sure it can surpass the boost and cache modes on the T2 SE although it might be able to match them with the 12x10 coil especially in mineralized dirt.

Three things i don't like about the GT is that the upper stem is so dam long which makes hard to throw in your backpack or suitcase for travel. The GT is heavy. And I can't get my head around the change in threshold null, it's unlike any other detector i have used.

Things I like about the GT is the sweet sounding tones, they are so smooth. I rather like using it in silent search. I don't mind the slow coil sweeping and I like the discrimination on iron.

I guess I have three questions.

1. Did any of you not like the GT when you first bought it?

2. Anyone willing to put up pictures of how they modified their GT? (I am based in the UK for the time being so I have the S rod version, and I think if I had a straight rod which makes the set up lighter and if that rod folds up in 3 parts, or if 2 parts so they are at least manageable length like 22-25 inches to make it more compact I would like the GT more)

3. How do you mount the 180 meter on the straight rod? ( I really like the meter on the GT)

4. How much performance am I going to forfeit if I always use the silent search feature, but set it up really well?

Any thoughts?

B7, I think the GT is a great detector.First Question I didn't like the Sovereign at first like most people.2nd Question UK should outlaw S rod GTs,if you want a straight rod conversion the GT stock straight asm is only $41.00 US at most dealers.Your arm cuff asm would fit and by a GT handle under $20.00 US at a lot of dealers.3rd question I use a copper pipe hanger with a V clip.4th Question didn't compare when I used a GT.Usually if I have too many detectors I sell the one that doesn't give me confidence. However the Sovereign will probably out perform the other two detectors on a salt water beach.Good Luck.

Thanks Ron,

So I can get a straight shaft for $41 and a handle for $20. Hmmmmmmm. I think I am going to put up a WTB post on a few forums. But again, that shaft is probably around 34" I am guessing and it doesn't fold in 2. Might not be worth putting more money in something I will probably end up selling anyways

Not only does the GT perform well on the beach it also performs well in high mineral soil. If you travel around to detect sooner or later you will run into high mineral dirt. I had a F75 LTD and I agree with you on the boost. A powerful detector. I personally could never get over the constant chatter myself. If you stick to the same area to hunt and never use the GT I would sell it in a couple months when the new price has people looking for used ones.

I have found the GT to outperform an Ace 250 and Tesoro Eldorado in mineralized soil. I have found, personally, the Explorer 2 to outperform the GT in Pacific NW mineralized soil, and have seen my friend's Etrac outperform my GT. I cannot run my GT in Iron Mask where I live. It will not quit falsing, unless I run exclusively in AutoSens. Hence, I run with Iron Mask off. I also find myself decreasing Sens to 2-3 quite often. My Explorer, although challenged, was more stable and versatile in the ground here in Oregon.

Up until very recently I would have said that the Etrac and Explorer should perform better because they cost a bunch more. now with the 200.00 increase in the Sovereign I have to say I would get the explorer too. Leads me to the question yet again what is Minelab up to?

i haven't found anything with the t-2 that the sovereign missed but i have found a few with the explorer xs. so if you sell it get an explorer.

So how much performance am I going to forfeit if I always use the silent search feature? I dont know if I can ever get over the nulling aspect. It seems like Minalab adversities it as an advantage by saying that it's great to know that you just passed over iron, but you can do that with most detectors now, except they reset much faster and dont null and null and null until the next targe hits.

in my soil explorer got less depth than gt and falsed more. med to high minerals. look up lightweight gt thread. my upper shaft is very short as i'm using whites tall man lower rod.

somebody might come bust my fingers when i heal so my messages stay short.

Seen many sell their Sovereigns and after they see what others are doing with their Sovereigns will try them again and once they learn them well you will have a hard time getting them to sell them again, or if they do chance are they will have one back again shortly.

That is the truth!

The only way I would sell my Sovereign short of a financial crisis, would be to buy a backup Excalibur. Probably not even then.
