If you use a free anti virus program, which i sure don't recommend anymore because they have become bloated and take too much RAM just like Norton used to> Avira by Antivir is an exception and likely the best of the free AV's. But never run two AV's at the same time.
Couple it with an anti malware program. Malwarebytes is free and the absolute best and is used by several large anti virus companies like Norton and Macafee to clean their customers machines, strange but true. Malwarebytes also has a forum which will help their customers clean infections on their machines.
Get and use an use an antispyware program, there many, i use Spybot. Update and immunize it often. Use Firefox or Safari for your browser not internet explorer!
Be sure and do the weekly microsoft updates and also regularly update your anti virus, even daily.
You will be fine.
