Bought a new AT PRO last week from a local dealer for $515!! (special promotional pricing) Considering picking up another unit since its the cheapest I have seen any where.... needless to say the wife isnt thrilled, what would you do??

Save up your pennies, save up your rocks
and you will always have tobacco in the old tobacco box.

You never know if one has to be sent in for repair. Also, owning a land machine and a water machine is also very common, as a lot of us hunt both land and sea. I guess a plus for an extra AT Pro would be that it covers both land and water, should one have to be sent in for repair. Then, any extra coils would still be usable. I own 2 yellow ACE's and keep the sniper on one and the large coil on the other for convenience. I know some water hunters who also keep an extra water machine as a backup, as a company building water machines has the usual electrical and coil problems AND issues dealing with water leakage. Metal detectors are not a static piece of electronic equipment like a stereo sitting on a shelf at home, but are used out in crude conditions including sudden temperature extremes, dirt, sand and physical abuse.

After I put a few nice rings on the fingers of my bride, she could care less how many detectors I have as long as the jewelry keeps coming. My arsenal consists of over 20 detectors and I love using all of them on occasion. I currently have 2 ATP's, one set up for water hunting with a straight shaft, 6 x 9 coil, and Grey Ghost underwater phones and the other with the stock DD coil and the headphone adapter with my Killer B phones attached. If you've got the sheckles to swing it, go for it...as long as you can keep the bride happy enough with a nice ring on occasion!!

I say if you have the extra $$ and the wife is okay with it GO FOR IT!!! I have been without mine for about 3 weeks due to sending it in for repairs and upgrades and I miss it sooooo much. I since have purchased a backup (not an AT Pro simply because I cannot afford it at this time) but its not the same. Remember "Happy Wife, Happy Life" :)

I would if I had the extra cash. If not I would just hunt for one season and cash in finds to fund the second one. I'm sure there will be more deals out there! Self supporting hobbies are good stuff !

You're putting your cart before the horse with only having owned your AT Pro ONE WEEK. Learn the one you've got, and then ascertain if you need a second one, not just because you got 70 bucks knocked off it. She (At Pro not your wife) hasn't even begun to break YOU in yet.........

I have been watching this group for a long time. Had I watched it before I bought mine, I probably would have delayed the purchase. There is an old saying in the automotive industry "never buy the first new model"

I have never seen so many people sending back detectors as I have here. While I like mine overall, I kind of have the feeling that it is not finished. I just got mine back from being updated and repaired and I have to agree with all the Garrett is great to deal with. But the question was should I buy another AT Pro and if it were me, I would enjoy what I have, be observant and wait for the dust to settle for a while. The AT Pro is a darned good detector and I predict it will get much better in the months ahead.

I learned long ago that it is wise to have a backup unit, regardless of make and model. A good percentage of water units will fail at some point.

I already had a very good detector at the time I bought the At Pro. I did send the ATP in back in April but I did not miss out on hunting at all. Just went back to my old detector for a few days. Actually I have two of the oldie but goodies Garrett Detectors. The original Grand Master Hunter and the Master Hunter 7 ADS.

Regarding getting a second At Pro, it is your choice but most any of the older model detectors can be bought very reasonable for a backup.

We will buy another one for our son.
Wife's all for.
We just have to buy it with the 1st ATP's loot.
Will have the required amount in no more then 2 weeks.

I've been told they fixed a number of issues - pinpointing, cam locks, and the leak issue. When I found that out, I ordered one and it should arrive tomorrow. Can't wait to see how it compares to the MXT Pro, which is an excellent machine.
