should i ask to detect it?

we have alot of road construction going on right now where the somebody company is tearing up the roads and doing something not sure what.......there is huge mounds of dirt all along the road side. would it be worth asking or do you think the dirt from under the street is just that...dirt.

My policy is always ask. Where man is, there is lost stuff. Under the road is probably the trail the deer used to get from place to place followed by the Indians and white man after him. That road may have been used for hundreds of years. And here you are the ground all in a pile with gold and silver coins in there and you ask, should I ??? Good luck.Z

it was one of the main roads for this town in the 1800s. but a good piece of advice was givin. dont they use fill dirt? so wouldnt all the goodies be buried under tons of fill?

actually more like filler gravel or larger rock often called 'open' [6'' open, 10'' open, etc]. If its dirt it's older than the road building standards set forth over 40 years ago. I would hit it.

dobbie, Doug is right. If you can go back 40 years when they were putting in the road. 1968 and go back another 30 years because that is about (+ or -) the use of coins. Look at the coins now. I find a number of coins form the 70's and not as many from the 60's. You got a good chance of finding a coin of two from the early 1900's. Coins seemed to hang around a lot longer back then. Made from good stuff back then.
The machine isn't all there is to metal detecting. It is the operator that makes the difference. I would be happy to have a partner with a BH to detect with. So don't knock the machine enjoy, enjoy the hobby.

Just my thought. Thanks for reading..Z

I was in Sanford Fl. in February. They were tearing up Park Ave. and replacing the bricks. Lots of dirt piles and exposed road bed. I MD'ed it after they left. If I would have asked they would have had to say no because of liability. There was no problem. Cops were driving by and people walking their dogs.

did you find anything? I asked this morning one of the workers if the dirt was fill dirt. he said no it is the O.G dirt from the O.G road in the 1800's. he also said he hadnt seen anything interesting. just dirt but if i want to i can detect it after they go home for the day due to saftey issues.the entire nieghborhood is tore up dirt piles everywhere.....whats the best way to detect this since i was thinking of going to it tonight....

I didn't find anything. I only checked the intersection at 6th to 7th street on park. The dirt was black so I thought it was old and not fill. One thing about it, if you do find something it is probably old.

this is what i found when i detected it. a wheatie from ????? and this.......any ideas on this would be awesome thanx
there was a bunch of other stuff to but mostley all rusted stuff.
