shortening coil cable

Actually it's the cable that goes from my digisearch meter to the box. I have the meter attached to my hip mount bag so I only need about 10 inches of cable instead of 5 ft.
So what would be the best way to shorten the cable? Cut off the plug that goes to the box and cut the extra cable and re-attach the plug? Will I need a new plug, or can I reuse it? Cut off some cable in the middle and splice the wires? I know a guy that works on marine electronics which seem to use similar plugs so I'll have him do the work but I thought I'd ask you all about it first before talking to him. Is this a standard plug that he can get? If not, where can I get the plug?
Any input would be much appreciated as I am obviously not an electronics guy.
Thanks,
Jim

When I shorten the coil cable on the 8 inch Coinsearch coil I cut off the plug and left a little wire on the plug so I knew which color wire goes on which pin. I cut down the cable and reatached the plus one pin at a time with the right color wire.
I used my old pug as i didnt have a new one at the time and it worked, but found out these same plugs are used by some CB Radio on the mics.

The Sovereign is one of the easiest cords to cut because there is no shield. Most important never cut too short or exact leave extra cord in case you make a mistake.Measure the cord from your meter and again give yourself extra cord and cut and reconnect or pin the female 6 pin connector back on with the exact color code to match your pins.Use your current connector as a guide for the pin match. If you haven't pined connectors there are plenty of mistakes to be made.Suggestion go to you tube for how to pin a connector.Good Luck.

There is an old saying in electronics that there is less chance of a failure when you've only got one solder point, so in other words I'd cut the cable and then re-attach at the plug.
