Short morning hunt.:detecting:

Had a 2 hour hunting time window this morning so hit a familiar old patch of woods. I had pre-determined which area I was going to search. A thicket about 25 yards long by 10 yards wide that you can barely stand up in and really all I could do was poke the small coil into what open spaces I could reach from that particular spot. One thing I have learned about woods hunting is that what terrain is tough to walk into today might not have been 5 or 10 decades ago. And, of course, vise versa.

Anyway, out of this patch I got a nice 1910 Barber dime, a very nice, for our ground, 1895 I H, 45p war nickel and 3 wheats, 20, 28 and 46, a 3 ringer and 4 Memorial cents and 2 clad dimes.

The first out of the ground shot is of a Mercury dime I got a few days ago that was still in my camera. The Barber I got this morning puts me at 135 silver coins for the year. With silver jewelry finds I have probably hit 150 silver pieces for the year. Almost all with the A T Pro.

Everyone have a great Thanksgiving. HH jim tn

Nice digs Jim.----Is there much civil war hunting in your area?-----As dedicated to the hobby as you are, I'll bet you would really be good at that also.--------Del

Nice digs Jim! I will be heading that way at dawn tomorrow...and hopefully getting a silver fix! Doing Thanksgiving later in the day so I've got all morning to poke around!

Del, there was a lot of Civil War activity in our area here and a lot of relic hunting takes place. Memphis was taken very early in the war and occupied throughout. Many camps and small battles all around the area. I enjoy relic hunting, Del, but nothing quite grabs me like seeing a smoky disc down in the dirt, or that glint of gold.

Taylor, I might have a short window to swing myself in the morning. Maybe our paths will cross. Otherwise, good luck to you. HH jim tn

I like your tip about hunting thickets and pre selecting the search area . Thanks for sharing those great pics.
Happy Turkey Day

Thats a great looking Barber straight from the dirt just the way it is!:clapping: Lets all try to get in a hunt over the Holiday to work off some stuffing.

Dang Jim, we need to change your name. To like, The Silver Fox,, or Silver Ninja.....or something like that! Do you find around that many every year, or are the numbers declining? I'd hate to know I was having to compete with you in my town, lol. I went yesterday for a couple of hours, and I was thinking about you and Mud, and all the pointers y'all have given us. But it was not my day....that day. My day will roll around again soon. Alll I found yesterday was clad.
Again, great job!

Thanks dgruff, and everyone else. I retired in the middle of 2006 and promptly began a regiment of old coin hunting almost every morning for 3 to 5 hours. Starting with year 2007 I have dug from 100 to 150 silver coins every year. There is a lot of old ground in our area, but there are a good number of diggers around as well. And, I do take my detector(s) along when my wife and I travel and vacation around at various spots. Anyway, I enjoy the hobby and just keep plodding along and am fortunate enough to get my coil over something good from time to time. HH jim tn

Jim, I've read some of your posts about what you pull out of the ground locally - digging a silver coin every three days (on average) is a fantastic silver recovery frequency!

I have about 30 years to go before retiring, and honestly in my field I could work well into my 80s since there are so few of us (hearing instrument dispensers) around the country and so many folks that are in need of hearing help. I hunt a lot at nighttime simply because I can't fit it into any other time of day when I'm not working or having family time - finding even one Wheat gets me excited and I've always had a goal of finding just ONE old coin per hunt.

Since I picked up the Deus, and have done more local research, many times it turns out to be multiple old coins or relics per hunt, and I couldn't be happier. Even if I had decided on a different brand of detector, I'm sure my totals would be similar to what they stand at now. Very happy with 81 silvers so far for 2014 - and looking to break 100 silvers for 2015!!! There's still time left this year to achieve that goal!

Id like to visit Overton Park one day (have never been there with a detector), but this Sunday I'm visiting a park in Knoxville that dates to the 1830s...hoping to pull "Just one old coin" from there!!!

GL & HH :beers:

Awesome Jim! You've been tacking up silver and goodies on the forum at an impressive rate. Being retired sure helps, I've been for just over 2 years now. Hunting for old coins and goodies as often as I do is something I used to daydream about. Now it's about living the dream
Keep on kicking that silver outta the ground and posting!
HH - Bruce

That's more silver than I've found since I started this hobby in Dec-2007. Just don't have the time and I'm disabled/retired. I should be able to go every week at least 2-3 times, but these old bones and looking after Mama doesn't leave me much time. Well done and I always enjoy your posts, Jim. We still have another month to go and I wonder just how many silver coins and jewelry items you will finish up with. I had permission to get access to detect this old area, but just couldn't get with the different land owners and have the time to do it and just sent the folks an email and maybe next year it will work out. Your mentioning the areas you couldn't hardly stand up in used to be cleared is correct because I've looked at aerial photos of this area I want to detect about 40 miles from home and what used to be an open area is all grown up in trees and brush.
