Short Monday hunt.

My brother in law from Ohio on a visit got a Compadra and wanted to go for his first hunt. The parks close around my area have been hunted too much so I went to my old 1950s Michigan Park Atlas and came up with a good candidate. The new park wasn't that far about a forty minute drive and would be a nice change for me and maybe make a great place for Robert's first hunt. The parking lot overlooked the parks long slope with old trees and well cut lawn of about 20 acres that lead down to a large beach.I gave Robert some pointer's gave him a long handle sand scoop and he went down to hunt the beach, which would keep the lawn out of harms way from a new hunter. After a few zinc pennies I got a 177-180 bounce which turned out to be a Canadian Dollar. One guy walking his dog came over and asked me if I found anything? His further comment"you are too late I have seen many people over here with metal detectors all the time"I thanked him for his information and continued hunting. After more clad found a wheat and then got a steady 144 lock on the meter.A flap was dug and put the S-1 probe on the bottom of the flap no signal hm mm must be a broken tab the probe got a signal in the hole but sounded faint.Anyway more digging and the target now down about seven inches. The nickle was now out on the top of the hole.My first thought a Buffalo but after a closer look a 1891 V nickle. Now I'm ready to get down to some serious hunting the ice has been broken.Robert walks up and said he found coins but the park ranger said we needed a permit to metal detect in this park and that we were being asked to leave.I went down to the beach and talked to the Ranger, Bob.I explained that even though I was from another county my taxes pay for Gennesse parks also and that this is just another way of getting more tax dollars.Hey I told Bob we should charge Gennesse people a toll just to use our roads in Oakland county.Anyway Bob laughed and I asked how much for a permit,he said ten bucks but you have to get them at the main office, which is a long drive.Well not a total lost Robert found his first coins, the park for me has possibilities.By the way went to the main office for a permit today the clerk was real nice, she said you must be the guy Bob was talking about from Oakland county. Congrats on finding the new park  and a new way of paying more taxes.

Rich, the V nickle is worn.I did a magnetic test to make sure it was a real Canadian Dollar.Well at least in the US we don't have iron in our coins yet.

Gary, looking forward to working the park. The park ranger went out of his way that day to help with directions to the main office. He got a big kick out of the I'm a taxpayer and already paying too much.I use too Ski Patrol for an Oakland county park and that was the first word used(I'm a taxpayer) when I told a hiker dogs not allowed on ski trails.

Gary, went to the park today for a search.Another park ranger asked if I had a permit and it was good to eliminate a problem. The couple hours there I found clad and four wheat's 1919D,1919S,1920,and a 1939.No silver but the older wheat's would indicate I'm going in the right direction. The ten dollars opens up a lot of parks.

You're so right on those early wheat's. When i find the early ones I automatically feel better about the area I'm in. Some people aren't too thrilled about finding them but I love em. Not only are there some fairly valuable ones but they're a good gauge of the area and they could just as well been silver.
Good hunting,Gary

Gary,I agree an area with lots of wheat's usually produces silver finds. The last couple of hunts I switch from my XS to an Elite the verdict is still out,but all Sovereign are great detectors.I saw an original on Ebay for a but it now for $300 tempted but have too many metal detectors.

I don't get thrilled with Wheats dug, but like you guys I do like to find them to indicate that the area has some history to it and that silver or other older coins should be present.

Critterhunter, been busy, but I would like to get back at the park. The early Wheat's and the V Nickle is a good indicator there may be some old silver lurking at the park.Sold my Tornado 800 coil and ended up buying another one from Gulf Hunter. The little T800 coil is the best trash coil for my hunting areas.Crazyman likes the S8 but I have used both coils side by side and the smaller T800 worked better.
