Short Hunt Nets Large Cent!

For the second day in a row I found a crusty Large Cent. Beautiful day so after Church we were waiting for a call from my Nephew so we could all get out together, unfortunately at the last minute his plans changed so Diane and I decided to hit a field in a local park. First target a wheat penny then we each got a nice buckle. Not many targets but amongst some iron I got a very clear 12-46 at 5" and I dug a very crusty Large Cent. This field had heavy farming on it for well over 150 years so the fertilizer did a job on this one. After washing it up I thought the bust looked a little different so I scrubbed it and while it is hard to tell in the picture you could see a blob of hair on the forehead and checking the reverse there was no line under the One Cent leading me to believe it is an 1839 "Booby Head" Large Cent. Whatever it is I was happy to find it.

Cool finds.
I too have found numerous coppers damaged from years of exposure to fertilizer and the elements.
A shame such lovely designs have to deteriorate so much.

The more I look at the Large Cent the more I believe I am wrong in the Booby Head designation, the spacing of the One Cent on looks wrong, most likely a Braided Hair...still no big deal I like it crusty or not!

These large cents are my all time favorite coin to find ,,,,,,They are very few and far between here in the midwest ! Nice Stuff Bell-two

man seems like you have dug a lot of LCs this yr Tony, how many you up to?

Well that is number 4 for the year not that many really compared to some but I am happy. I had 5 last year and did not think I would come close this year since I lost so much time to my hip surgery. Now with field hunts on the horizon maybe I can beat that total anyway!

where you guys digging all these LC ? what part of the country are you......

Well Terry and I are both from Ohio, but on opposite ends, he is more North I am more South. I found my first Large Cent on August 10th 2010 since then my total found is 11, most have come from old houses and fields. Those are the best places to find the Large Cents.

"Nothing says old like a Large Cent!"

LC's are always a great find - congrats !

Way to go on the LC, Tony! Thanks for the pictures.
