Short hunt gives up an OLD BIG ONE!!:super:

Hello all,
I haven't had a chance to get out hunting very much lately and had really been itching to get out. I was out for a short hunt before work hoping to pull just one keeper. I went to a pounded park that has never given me any old coins (only a silver Washington), but was hopeful for today. Right off the bat I was getting deep clad and decided I would stick around until I found an old coin, sure am glad I did. I started to work around an old tree to see what pocket drops the tree had collected over the years. About 8 feet from the base of the tree I got a solid signal that was bouncing between 50c and 1.00. I pinpointed and saw that the signal was only 4 inches, fully expecting a snapple lid or copenhagen top or something of the sort I dug it. Got some dirt out of the hole and my sunray probe was making the signal sound good as well. I dug some dirt out with my hands and felt the "bigness". I though it may be a coin so took out my water bottle for a quick clean. First thing I saw was the eagle on the back, and instantly knew what I had, it is a 1880 Morgan Dollar :yikes:. This is my first silver dollar and my oldest coin to date. Shaking like a leaf, I sat down at the tree and called a few of my hunting buddies to share the moment, wish MontanaMatt could have been with me on this hunt to share the excitement. Thanks for checking out the post and HH!

Holy smokes! Congrats on your Morgan dollar find jcooking! I have yet to find the illustrious Morgan dollar. That is very exciting and congrats on such an exciting find! :clapping:

She's a beauty for sure. WOW! What a great story and I am so happy for you. You've got me shaking from the excitement of finding that SILVER DOLLAR! Thanks for posting. Great pictures and BIG congratulations. I can only imagine you sitting underneath the tree while making those calls to your friends with an ear to ear grin on your face! :wiggle: I bet you've still got that smile on your face. I know I would.

I had to go back and look at her again. SWEET coin for sure and what a nice piece of history. Oh, if it could only talk. HH, Nancy

Dude !!!!!! I already found that one. I just put it back in the ground to give you a chance. Won't do that again! NICE find Six-Tone J .

Great Find! Love those old designs.

Actually horses were very, very, expensive back then. Before the Civil War horses commonly sold for $125.00. By the end of the Civil War a good horse was $185.00. Thousands killed in the war. You don't have to wonder why the photos and drawings always show so many walking. Even as late as 1880, good common horses were easily selling for $100. That is why horse theft was taken so seriously. Didn't take but a small heard to be worth more than the whole ranch.
