Short Hunt: An Indian and What Is This Thing????

Erik

New member
Did a short hunt this evening in the park where I found the seated quarter last weekend. First good hit was this IH Cent (1902). Got a couple of wheaties (1913, 1941, & 1958 ) and this thing that seems to be made of lead, although there's no white patina -- could it be pewter???). Notice the rings on it. The back is caved in and after cleaning it with my GemOro ultrasonic cleaner, it's quite pitted and appears to be kinda old. Any ideas?

The mystery object looks like a really beat up piece of Lead. Maybe a Bullet? You should have posted your Wheats also. I know they are just Wheats but they still are old coins and are always better to find than Memorials. Anyways, WTG with the Indian and Wheats and hope you find out what that mystery item is and better Luck next time and HH.

Thanks Jim, Well I was a little hesitant to post just the IH as it wasn't much, but I don't seem to find that many IH for some reason. I have found tons of old wheaties going back to the '00s & teens. I guess I was trying to find out what that pewter (?) whatzit might have been. It's quite heavy for its size and has some distinctive rings on it, but does not seem to be a minnie.

I have a feeling that there's a lot of good stuff in this park a little deeper than my Explorer can go.

I ran in Deep mode today, but does that option actually make the unit go any deeper??? It doesn't seem like it - it just seems to make shallow target sound like they are deeper though the depth gauge still shows them as relatively shallow.

As far as I can tell it makes the signal more solid and less choppy if you ran in Fast when you get a deeper signal. Is there a lot of Iron or Trash items in this Park? If yes, than maybe you should work it with a smaller coil or run Fast and just go slow. And what kind of sweep speed are you using? Normal or a Slow Sweep? There has to be more Indians in that Park but if it is filled a bit, all it takes is 4"-6" of dirt and you won't be able to reach them. Hope your luck continues for older coins in that Park of yours and HH.

as I see your still pulling oldies out of it. Nice little Indian Erik and the odd ball piece looks as if it could be an old bullet made from lead and someone used it for another purpose at one time by beating it to death. Anytime you find a '13 wheat it id certainly an oldie. WTG and Congrats.

could possibly be a meteorite. If it feels like lead but it's not soft, it's quite possible. Check it with a magnet, meteorites are mostly iron. I've only seen large ones but there are many smaller ones out there..the ultimate hot rock! I'm sure you can find out through a Web site and there is a guy in Arizona that will buy them, look under the name "meteorman" or follow the links. Of corse, it could be a bullet too if the above doesn't check out. Good luck, and nice Indian. Ron

I know you didn't dig up only two objects -

I always say the good days make up for the not so good days! Right

I got my first seated last night - 1/2 dime

also a barber dime and two gold tickets

And a Ring you wont believe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It's got History Mate!!!

Doing my invoice for the last couple of days, and will post the whole booty later-

HH Bruce

it's got those distinctive rings on it plus that circular cap on the nose. It looks to me like it's been molded by the hand of man. After cleaning, it's looks quite old and no patina though which is weird so I don't think it's lead. It's quite heavy for it's size so it's a real mystery object!

Hi Bruce! Your #1 fan here! Seated half dime is incredible and I look forward to seeing the old ring too! Think I'll have to book a ticket soon so I can learn the magic of the ChiliMan.

Yeah, I should have posted the whole nut, I think it would help all of us here if people were to post pics of their nuts :yikes: like on the Water forum.

With all your treasure, mate, Arnold's gonna have to outlaw you pretty soon! :bouncy:

Hi jb,

Yes, this park has yielded some interesting finds over the years like my first 2 cent piece, a small sterling silver lock, large Canadian cent, large English pence, a tiny token from a trolley line that has been shut down a long time ago. Thanks for your post!

Thanks James.....got out there last night for a couple of hours and I found three more IH's (1905, 1881, and 18xx). The '05 is in pretty good shape, but the '81 and 'xx are worn quite thin and pitted. I'm surprised to see a worn thin cent....wouldn't it take quite a while to wear a cent coin thin? The latter coin I can't read the date....any tricks? I put them in my ultrasonic cleaner and then took a brass brush to them with a little soap and water, then applied olive oil. Also found an old cast button as well as a whatzit or two. Will post some pics tonight. Funny thing is that I only found one wheatie - first time I ever found more IH cents than wheats!

I have no idea what it is, just thought maybe it's a meteorite because of the color and weight. Who knows?? Ron

Hope to see your pics of your Indians and other finds tonight when you get a chance to post them. I don't have any magical way of pulling the date off of a Penny but if you take some Aluminum Foil and place over the top of the coin and gently rub it with your thumb it might pull the date for you. Maybe you could even blow up a picture of the Indian on your scanner or computer and get lucky and see the date that way. Good Luck and hopefully you will see the date on that worn Indian Cent.
