Shield nickel

Went back to my honey hole for a few hours. I started pulling the usual old wheats and old nickels. I got a 12-12 12-13 dancing around at six inches. Dug my plug and out comes this funky looking thing. At first I thought it was a nickel that had been in the ground forever. Did the spit test ha we all done that before. Seen five cents with stars around it. Thinking not your average nickel today son. Got home washed it with soap and water this coin was nasty. Let it soak in olive oil for a few hours but still looked bad. With nothing to loose I broke out the sos pad and cleaned up pretty good. Took it to work and look at through a microscope. The best I can make out on the date is 1867 or 1868. Wish it were in better shape but I am happy. Next time around I may find something better. The oldest coin to date found with the Etrac.

For some reason I cannot upload my pics from my cell. Oh well will post when I get off work this evening.

Use naval jelly on those old crusty nickels, that rust will come of in no time at all.

Nice Find...! Look forward to seeing it.

VERY, VERY odd a shield nickel came in at 12-12, for they are smaller than normal nickels, and all the ones I have found come in WAY lower, like 08-10

That Sheild nickle is a great find ! I dug one that you could just barely make out the 5 and stars 20 yrs ago.
I have a coin no,s chart for the E-trac(that somebody posted on here) that shows the shield nickle coming in at 12 12-13
So thats where I assumed they would come in at. Thanks for the tip Goes4ever.
I just ordered the E-trac and need all the help I can get can. Good Luck, HH!

Shield nickels have given me readings from 13-12, to all the way down to 04-07 depending on the depth . The most shallow one was 3'' , the deepest was right at 9''. If it reflects good ,i dig it.To date I believe I have found 8 of them most are pretty rusty and the dates are hard to see. Fun to find tho. V nickels are a different story. I use a 6'' Excelerator EQ2 Pro coil and woudnt trade it for nothing.

Congrat's on finding a Shield Nickel - regardless of condition - a great find !
