I have both of these detectors and use the same 4" coil on both. The ss 2 seems to be about an inch deeper in air tests. What do you all think about this? Does this sound right to you folks with lots of experience?

Could be, however I don't put too much weight in air tests. The real test of any coil is how deep it actually detects targets in the ground. I've had defective coils that worked great in air tests but would just chatter and give off false signals while trying to use them in the field. Field tests are the only true tests of a coils performance.

From what I've read about the Platinum, no. If I recall correctly, the SS2 coil has the standard BH push-in type plug and the Platinum has the Teknetics Greek seris screw-in plug.

Probably. The F2 stretches to get 7" with a stock coil. I don't use pucks. I have a NEL sharpshooter coil on my F2. As deep as the stock coil (7") yet DD and a bit larger for better sweeps. It still cuts like a knife. Make sure neither units have disc on. Disc reduces detection.
