Sharp Barber Quarter Yesterday

hello again,

i went out today to the park where i found my 24K ring last tuesday. the hunt started out slowly, finding only two wheats in a couple of hours. i moved to another part of the park, to an area where i have found early wheats and a barber dime a few months back. i began swinging the explorer slowly, listening for any sort of high 'peep'. i heard a signal that sounded good enough to stop me in my tracks, but upon further inspection all i heard was iron. i heard what sounded like a good signal, but it was overpowered by the super-high iron tone. the ID was iron all the way. i decided to dig the iron out...turned out to be a screw at a couple of inches. when i rechecked the area i heard a great signal three inches from where the screw was. there was still some iron very near, but getting that screw out of the way enabled me to hear the good signal. i dug down and about four inches on the side of the hole my probe screamed at me. i dug a bit more dirt out and felt my digger hit something. i cringed! i looked down and saw silver. it was angled at 45 degrees in the side of the hole. i saw a face peeking out at me. i saw only the eyes and nose and thought,"merc?" popped it out and it was much bigger than a merc...it was a 1911s Barber Quarter!!! this baby is sharp! and super-clean. i did, however, nick it on the chin. darn! what you see in the pics is how it came out of the ground. this is the cleanest BQ i've ever found. i've found 6 or 7 in my life and they have all been messed up somehow. they've been either bent, black or both. this one looks brand new!

after i stopped staring at the coin i got back to detecting but only managed one other wheat- a '37 from the same area.

enjoy the pics!

HH,

Mike

AWESOME... It looks good.

Aren't you glad you didn't really tick it with your digging tool. Your scratch is not really a goudge and can easily be looked at a contact mark from being in the bag. It looks to be between AU-50 and MS-60; $275-$350 (2008 Red Book). I'd say AU-50 for the wear on the wing tips. SWEET.:beers:

hi digitrich!

unfortunately, the picture is a bit misleading. the scratch is worse than it appears in the photo. i guess the light is not really showing the scratch too much in the pic, but when i hold it and the light hits the scratch mark...well, it breaks my heart. thanks for the kind words though! i'm heading back to the same park right now. my game plan is to dig every signal in the woodsy area where i found the barber to see if any more oldies were missed due to iron. i'll keep you posted.

HH, Mike

Don't feel bad I did the same to a 1894 Barber dime AU-50 the other night. My only consolation was there also was a piece of shotgun brass in the hole at the time and my only indication of silver was a tiny non repeating silver signal amongst the louder brass repeating signals. The difference between yours and mine is I was in a plowed field and could of dug any size hole I wanted to, and didn't. :rage: If it weren't for my X-1 probe I am pretty sure I'd make them all ugly.

It looks to me that the scrape on the chin was made long ago. It just isn't shiny like a new scrape would be, at least not in the Pic. Nice Find though! Gotta take them High Grade Coins when you can since they are hard to find, no matter if there is a small imperfection on them. Congrats on that Barber Quarter! Good Luck and HH.:detecting:
