SHARK !!!

OK People, Let's hear some discussion on sharks.
Saw on the evening news about thousands of sharks of the coast of Florida and a lady getting bitten on the calf in waist deep water off Daytona Beach.
We are leaveing in two weeks for Florida's east coast and my wife is already panicked and we can't even see any water. Frankly, I'm not feeling too good about it either.
I have heard of people scaring off a bear by turning their detector on and off with the speaker volume at full tilt. Don't know about sharks though.
Trust me, I am no where even close to walking on water either.
I really do need some feed back.

I had asked the forum members months ago about sharks and had 0 response. I guess there are no shark authorities that are into treasure hunting. A friend of mine told me sharks are exremely sensitive to electrical current due to sensors in their facial area and that this is how they locate food. Electrical current is something they avoid and we are using pulse units in the water. It would stand to my reasoning that they would avoid us. Has anyone ever been attacked or even had a close call with a shark while surf hunting?

Not hunting but had a great white take a pass at me while diving with three other guys. There were fish everywhere then they all vanished and it got real scary ..only a 10 or 12' but i got to tell you he was MASSIVE in any event..saw his eye and teeth... getting back to the beach was the longest moments in my life, felt like i was super glued to the water, swiming in jello. had to change my suit after that one...Problem with sharks is there always there you just dont see them 90% of the time. Had bad dreams about that one for months....

I have 2 main rules in life to guide me.
1. SOMETHING on my plate HAD to be running for it's life, before showing up on my plate.
2. NEVER swim ANYWHERE where everything has teeth.
Follow these simple rules, and you will never git shark bit.

read about being bit by a shark????? How many people go swimming. Sharks normally attack something he is going to eat and we are not usually on his diet....if we were, odds are that he would come back for another taste.
I have been in the water most of my life at the surface and in my diving days, somewhere between the top and bottom. My thoughts are, you stand more chance of being struck by lightning than a shark bite. Come to think of it, don't you read more about people and lightning strikes than shark bites.
DON"T WORRY ABOUT A SHARK.....

I'm sure that the surf hunters down at the location you are visiting will appreciate that one less visiting detectorist has opted to stay out of the water for fear of JAWS !! Did you watch that stupid spring break shark attack movie piece of rubbish on ABC too ?? I'll be heading to Florida in 3 weeks myself (west coast) been going to my timeshare for bout 12 years now same time every year never been attacked by a shark yet while in the gulf. been brushed by a tarpon, stepped on a few sting rays (I wear hard sole dive boots), and I've seen a few sharks in the distance, but I haven't been attacked yet.....take my advice Lee....don't lose sleep over it...and enjoy the water and go find some of that florida gold already !! HH....Brian

Here we have had several people bitten by sharks, mostly bull sharks. One making national news. But think about it, how many thousands of people in the water during the summer months. that's pretty low odds. If you really knew what was swimming around you, most likely would never get back in the water again. The biggest thing to be concerned about is bait fish, mullet, menhaden, and the like in schools as sharks, mackerel, barracuda, and blue fish like to feed on them. This is the time to really be out of the water. Not only sharks might mistake you for lunch, but bluefish might be more of a threat. I have seen some pretty nasty bites from blues. Sharks tend to come close to shore to bear their young which are born live and swimming, jaws and all the works operating. I have lived in Cocoa Beach for a while, and the rest of my life here on the Gulf, by far the east coast has more sharks inshore. Only one white I have seen on the East coast.
The only thing I

Hey Lee,Calm down..unless you like to get beat up by the surf in chest deep water you don't have a worry..
Just check the low tide chart for the weeks your hunting..Hunt the low tide wet sand out to about 2 ft deep and you'll be hunting what was waist deep 7 hours eariler.. the trick is to plan your trip a year ahead to match 2 low tides a day about 4am and 4pm..then you'll get what swimmers lost during the peak swim crowd at 11-3...which will be at the wet sand line out to abot 2 ft deep..HH BigDave

Ok, most of you say you don't worry about it, at least not too much. I have also learned:
1. Don't go out in deep water. Shallow low tide water that was deep high tide water is OK.
2. If I see one and the water turns to Jello I'll think of ol pirate robert.
3. Sure wish I knew where the heck I should go. Those of you that know ain't tellin.
4. Only reports I've gotten are about beaches that are or have been "replenished." I would need a very deep detector and a back hoe.
5. Last year I had an MXT and had a good time. This year I've added a CZ20 to my collection of two. Since this thing don't pulse it may not qualify as shark deterrent. I'm really looking forward to getting into the water anyway.
6. If you don't see any of my posts after mid May, your advice was false.

... if you are eaten by a shark you will be making a positive contribution to the environment !

Yeah, Tell your wife not to worry...the Sharks are MAN eatters !!! LOL No don't worry just have fun !!! and pray 1st...that always helps !!

You are surrounded by beaches right where you live. West of you is a whole line of beaches and parks extending over a hundred miles.
Get a dry suit and hye thee to the west coast of michigan, Or, go east of Midland.
Speaking from experience, you may come back from Florida poorer, and disappointed in the poor finds down there.
I'm saving up my gas money to come over your way in August. I intend to raid YOUR cookie jar!!!

Hey, I'm a beginner! What do I know???? I just got my first detector, a Whites MXT, this last spring.
I just started beach hunting. Have done it twice. My first time was at Caseville for a weekend with my detecting club. I liked it!
The second time was almost two weeks at Myrtle Beach in early October. Liked that too.
Common thread about beach hunting is that the rough surf pulls off the jewelry. Ain't much rough surf around here. Horse play also plays a major part but that is every where.
Using the MXT I have been limited to the beaches and (calm) shallow surf. I just got a Fisher CZ20. Haven't even used it yet but am anxious to start. We have a two week vacation coming up and so I want to do some salt water beaches.
I plan on doing Michigan's fresh water beaches on weekends. We have a 5th wheel camper and try to get out for three and four day weekends as often as we can. Metal detectors - Never go on vacation without them.
I have my sights on an old swimming hole as soon as I get a little practice with the CZ.
I'm not a diver and am way over my head in buying two detectors. Now I have to start producing some good sparkly finds that will either look good on my wife or that I can sell to recoup some of my expenses.
Where are you going in Michigan? Maybe I could get a chance to meet you? Let me know where and when in August. I'll check my schedule and get my wife's permission.
