shallow clad signal turns out to be 162 year old coin!

Met up with Park Pirate at the same old hunted out park. We were just about to give up on this place and move on to greener pastures. Every time we're about to call it quits there, she gives up a few more finds to keep us coming back. Park Pirate had a couple good finds and then he walks over and drops a nice silver coin in my hands. I'll let him disclose that one when he posts later on. I did manage to pull a nice 1908 indian head cent that was surrounded by trash then I headed over to an area where I dug my one and only gold coin last year. On the side of a hill I dug an upper right hit on the crosshairs with the depth meter showing it was right on the surface. 99 out of 100 times I would walk right past that signal because I suspected in was just a clad coin. Since targets were few this morning I decided to dig it. Instead of digging my usual plug I just stuck the digger in to pop the shallow coin out of the ground. Sure enough, no more than an inch deep, out popped the coin. At first glance I thought it was a new presidential dollar coin. When I wiped of the face of the coin and saw "one cent" I couldn't belive my eyes. Never in a million years did I expect to see an 1851 large cent. Only two old coins today but the large cent made it worthwhile. Tony ended up with some nice coins and bling today also.

i've found that the further up the hill you go the shallower the targets are going to be.

way to go. you just never know that's what makes this hobby so addictive
