Shaft locks

pistolpete

New member
Is trere anyone that could explain to me by description/pictures,etc how to install/remove the factory shaft locks used to secure the lower rod to the upper tubing. I am going to make my own straight shaft and I have new shaft lock assembly but cant figure out how it attaches to the shaft or how to remove the one on my s rod. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanx...Pete

The part that I am talking about is the black round collar on the outside of the upper tube where the lower shaft slides into the upper shaft and you twist the collar to lock the lower shaft in place. Pete

THAT TWISTY PIECE OF SHIT U USE TO TIGHTEN WITH...........HELL I THROUGH THAT AWAY AFTER THREE WEEKS - 15 YEARS AGO

PETE, BUY ONE OF THESE OR ONE OF THE NEW STRAIGHT SHAFT RIGS MADE NOW, GET RID OF THAT ANTIQUE RIG.

JUST POST ON THIS FORUM WHERE U CAN GET ONE.............

The ring at the back of the cam is glued on. Usually some CA glue or "Super Glue" was used to hold it. A small razor blade can be inserted in the seam and maneuvered around the circumference to easily break the bond.

Pay close attention to the cam position in these pics! When reinstalling, it has an index pin that should be towards the top of the shaft. Otherwise you'll never get the Grip Cap over it.

That's exactly what I needed to see! Thank you very much for taking the time to make those photo's for me. Pete

I've noticed that only a few people actually go out to the breakers to head off the gold before it gets to the lane. And your a big fella so for a brace you really need the strength of fiberglass. I mean, take Bia for instance... I would image the wind from the waves alone would blow her back to the slope so she really has no requirement for fiberglass. Plus, she wouldn't go out there in the first place.

Hehehehe

Max...how do straight shafts such as Babbs connect to the lower rod that comes with the Excal?

Tony.

Babbs shaft doesn't have a cam lock. The lower fiberglass rod goes inside the shaft as normal but only depends on the single "push pin" for a lock. You know, the push pin on the lower shaft! The trick to Babbs shaft is the aluminum outer shaft goes further down the lower fiberglass shaft to add that extra support.

Thanks for the information.....I now have it pictured in my mind how it's setup. I wonder if the single piece shaft is stronger than the two piece breakdown version.

Thanks again,
Tony.

Babbs 2 piece shaft is dubbed a "travel shaft". I ordered one by mistake but used it anyway. Unfortunately, it didn't last a month. Not because it broke but because it became so wobbly at the joint. I COULDN'T STAND IT! Of course, it was very tight when I first bought it but using it as a brace in the ocean took its toll on it very quickly. Being disappointed I purchased 2 lightening rods from Reilly's Treasure Gold. The shafts are very nice in their own way and differ from Babbs but neither manufacturers seem to have the best solution. The best solution can be found at the hardware store in the form of a fiberglass rake! I will tell you the Babbs one piece shaft is the better of the two. The grip and forearm cup on Reilly's was too far apart for me. I'm 5'8" and my elbow was in the cup when I grabbed the grip. I had to move the cup 3 inches down for Bia and 2 inches down for me. The cup is also very square and is not tapered at the top causing the upper most corner to dig into the side of your bicep on out swings. I lowered it enough to make this problem minimal at best but the modification prevents the Minelab head unit from being shaft mounted.
