Several firsts and several lessons learned today

Went door knocking today and got a few good leads, but basically struck out minus a few wheats at an old bar I hit for half an hour or so. I got turned down a couple of times, but the bigger problem is nobody's home on a sunny Saturday! Oh well, I got some numbers and will make some calls over the next few weeks.

Anyway, I ended up back at a school that I've been working lately. It was built in 1926 and is still in use. I hit it for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I first got my Etrac and have hit silver there each time I've been back. I know other people have hit it....even had a guy come up to me tonight and ask me if I was having any luck. At that point I wasn't, and I told him so, and he told me that "only junk comes out of here" in his experience. I pulled my third Merc out of there tonight, and the first target I hit after that guy left was my first Barber dime (out of the same hole I had just pulled a wheat out of and then covered back up before thinking "hey, maybe I should check that"). So, tonight was my first multi-silver hunt, my first Barber, and my first time destroying a target...

I've hit on silver jewelry in the past, but I hadn't seen any at this school (although I did get an UGLY costume jewelry ring here tonight as well). I got a 12-46 repeatable signal next to a tree and when I started digging I hit BIG roots. What I was expecting to be another Merc was about 7" down underneath a root that was about 5" in diameter and sort of lodged between two other decent sized ones under the big root. My digger wasn't close to being small enough to work around the roots, but my screwdriver was. Over the course of about 10 minutes I resigned myself to whatever was going to come out of there (I'm stubborn and didn't intend to leave it) would probably be scratched. When it popped out, it ended up being a thin Sterling ring I had accidentally grabbed with the screwdriver. I bent the heck out of it and actually broke the ring. Luckily it wasn't something real valuable, but I did learn something!

Good job! Love seeing those old silvers come to light. I wish we would get a little more rain here in South Texas...sure made digging a lot easier on this old man. Keep up the good work! HH

yea nice job.

It was interesting with the rain here... I hit this site about a week ago and a couple of times shortly before that, and was getting a lot of good, solid hits. We got about 4" of rain here Thursday night and the ground is real soft now even though this school is at the top of a hill. I got so many falses and nulls today it was almost impossible to keep a threshold at times.

Nice keepers--congratulations! Seeing silver in the hole always makes for a happy time. Working around roots certainly can make a recovery frustrating and difficult. Good job and thanks for the pictures.

Yes, digging in tree roots can be a nightmare - congrats on the firsts and on the great finds !

Congratulations on your first Barber dime! Thanks for the story and the pictures.

Funny how one guy says nothing but trash comes out of there, but the e-trac is pulling lots of goodies! Congrats!

He said he's always been a Whites guy...not sure what model he's got though.

I had a 1916 school close to me still open and I was told it was pounded and hunted out....guess what my minelab got? Over twenty silver coins, tons of wheats, couple rings, and lots of old nickels and clad....hunted out, I dont think so! It virtually void of signals now after the minelab worked it over after a dozen plus visits lol

Nice coins, Jeff! Hey if you are going to hit either the ring, or the Barber - hit the ring every time! LOL

Glad to see you are taking to that Etrac!

Some good firsts, congrats on the first Barber! Don't worry about breaking the ring, at least you got it out.

Couple years ago i searched this large Fairgrounds located in the middle of a large city.
Lots of shallow clad, cheap jewelry, silver ring and some wheats but after a bunch of detecting sessions there... no silver coins.... and these Fairgrounds go back to the late 1800s.

Then one day, got a strong dime ID right smack on a large Oak root. Pulled out a rosie silver dime lodged under the root with a screw driver and a lot of work.
This was only one silver coin out of two i found in this park. The past park pounders either missed it or didn't want to bother with the roots!
