I have older modified excals with larger coils and use:

Sensitivity just outside of auto
Discrimination at about 4
Volume almost max
Threshold just audible over the sound of the waves (wading)
Hunt in pinpoint, when you get a target switch to discrimination to check it (I have pin point mod)

You may be able to lower your discrimination a little more (lower number) with your stock coil.

I have stock 1000.. i prefer to hunt in disc mode, disc setting at 1,sensetivity 12 oclock straight up,volume barely audible. .turn sensetivity down slightly if too much falsing..

You are better off listening to the sensitivity especially if you have a USED Xcal. A lot of time knob have been removed for various reasons or none are set alike when put on if you get what im saying. Just set it till it chatters a bit and back it off if you cant stand it. You can get a little more modulation if you back the volume to 3/4 as well. Threshold can be a little different between disc and PP too. You need to run in disc just a buzzzz but in PP... running it a bit higher can get you some weak targets.

Robo...... im curious why you are running 3 disc with PP? Does it have to do with flipping back to disc to check targets? Not sure the disc is working even in PP..... but you have to consider 1 on and Xcal is the salt setting right there where small gold is...... nulls over iron, but there are targets.... worthwhile deeper targets between 1 and 3. Disc is nothing more than shutting off the volume for those to the phones. Larger coils already reduce the size of targets this may be reducing them even more. If you disc out 3 and below..... it nulls these tones just like iron in disc. So you dont know or wont get that non-ferrious beep. Anyone hunting in disc would also get more nulls....... meaning a lot more coils shut down time..... and the dang thing is slow to response anyway.
