Settings performance

I'm a long time Explorer II user and I've done very well with, never felt outclassed by any machine including Etracs. This year I hunted with several CTX users and for the first time really could not compete with a couple of the CTX users but a couple I could. They seemed to use different setups for their machines which produced very varied results, some could not pick up good signals picked up by the A class users .neither could I.It looks like how the unit is set up makes a huge difference in performance in trashy park setting. It seems to me,using a real simple machine to set up in an Explorer, that CTX is rather complex and like the Whites DFX,you better get it right or performance can really suffer.I am seriously considering a CTX but I'm concerned that I would be spending many hours tweaking settings and modes to get it perform for my hunting.I would appreciate any users insights.

You can and should play around with settings to see what works for you in your area BUT once you have it figured out you will be golden. It really won't take you too long and there is a lot of info on this site to help you dial it in. It seems confusing at first but it makes sense soon enough. The CTX3030 is worth it.

I too was a long time FBS user with the Explorer II being my favorite.... Before my CTX arrived I contacted Digger and told him how I intended to set the CTX up and he gave me some recommendations on what he thought would work. When the CTX arrived I took to a place that I knew well and finds were rare.... For the first 2 hours I fiddled with my modified programs & then loaded what Digger had told me and things started popping...The factory programs are fine but can be messed up easily which I did...After that first 3 hour hunt I have changed very little to my main program.. I have made several similar programs for specific conditions but most are just small tweaks in the bins and associated tones for some of the different areas I hunt....If you listen to Digger you should be able to be able to be up and performing well within a few minutes to a few hours....Its not nearly as complicated or hard to keep operating at top level as a DFX/ V3... wildherre

To be perfectly frank with you, I have been using the CTX for six months and feel more and more confident with it each passing day. I have used virtually all of the preset patterns and many of the patterns that members uploaded to the resource forum and have come to the conclusion that the only way I am really going to determine what is under the coil is to hear everything so I use very little disc. and totally open screen as my pattern 2 and often switch to pattern 2 when I suspect a coin is being masked by iron. I love the bins and have set them to suite my particular audio preferences. Ferrous coin is the most stable for me so I use it exclusively. I do love the target trace and find that it helps me better determine what is going on below. Finally, I determined early on that the depth on the CTX is incredible so I have backed off on sensitivity and use straight Auto and can go down to 12+ inches easily. The lower sensitivity also helps keep the noise and falsing to a minimum.

I didnt want to make it sound like you will know everything there is to know in a few hours but feel you should be able to find stuff you couldnt find before in that amount of time..The CTX has plenty of room to grow into & I try to learn something everytime out.... Still plenty I dont know about it which makes it more fun...wildherre
