Settings for Silver Sable uMax

Just wondering what were the best settings/discrimination for various type of metals. I relaize this might be in the manual but have lost it. THanks

I start out with the sensitivity at 8-10, threshold at a light hum then set the disc as follows. I generally throw a nickel on the ground, then run the disc to where it cracks and scratches, around 5, then turn back just enough to give a solid signal. On mine tabs crackle and disappear from 7 to 8, zinc pennies a bit higher and up around full disc. I can lose clad and silver. I thumb the disc between the settings I mention and with a bit of practice you can get pretty accurate on coins versus trash. It's very helpful/important to learn the crackle at the point where the different targets drop out as the drop out on some of the targets is fairly close. You should experiment with your machine a bit as yours and mine may not be calibrated exactly the same or the knobs may be pointed a tad differently. Once you've determined how the different targets act in relation to the settings, you may wish to mark them for repeatability. Hope this is useful.

I'll go pretty much with the Barber...

I usually run the sensitivity close to the top, as he describes, unless I get chatter, for some reason.

I mostly run the discrimination at 2 or just a tad more... 2 1/2

Wouldn't turn it up any higher unless I started getting too much foil in a particular area.

I don't ever 'thumb the wheel' , so to speak...

Many valuable rings are indistinguishable from a pull tab or bit of can slaw...
You just gotta dig 'em to be sure.
It's a small price to pay after the detector did all the work of finding where the target is !

...and I toss out a nickel every time I detect, to verify my machine.

Good luck,
rmptr

My favorite setting is where a piece of foil breaks up.l don't lose too many rings that way. In my school areas I have picked up the trash regularly and am now done to min disc.

Previous posts provide good info relative most settings..As far as discrimination goes depend what your after and high disc. can cause loss of depth along with losing a lot of goodies including gold rings. Advise you to do some experimenting to see where various targets disc out and go from there...
Some have become very adept at thumbing the disc and in doing so are vey successful in field...

If you wanna get really fancy set your initial hunting setting where Barberbill suggested. Now rotate your dial until tabs just start to break up. Mark or memorize this setting and return to the foil reject setting and begin hunting. When you get a signal, rotate back to this memorized setting and (1) if the signal goes silent now, it's in the nickel range, (2) if it breaks up, it's in the tab range, and (3) if it still gives a good signal, it's in the coins range. It's not a perfect notch discriminator, but it's close! And you only have to make one move!
