settings for deep coins

What are the best all around settings for deep coins using an F-75.

It depends on the ground but you have to first really find clean ground to fast grab..so pull your pinpointer trigger and find a clean area then do FG. I use a disc of 0-5... two plus tones and a sens of 70-90. You have to explore the non iron tone and slow down and look at your VDI. If you are relic hunting anything from 20-90 dig. Look for broken glass or pottery and then find the sweet spot and work the nails and iron out of that. Overloads should be dug they turn up horse shoes and axe heads and tools and a load of interesting stuff plus ti cleans the ground and helps you find the stuff that is hiding near or under it. Masking is a big part of missing targets but the F75 is really fast and if you slow down and take your time and investagate the iffy sounds that are not iron you are on your way to uncovering some coo stuff.

I agree with L B.
G B is important, i sometimes give it a slight positive bias to reduce phantom sounds from the ground by this i mean if the fast grab GB was say 70 i would manually set it at 72 or 73.

When using disc on 2 tone discrim anywhere from 0 to 4 which will keep it in one of the high gain modes.
Monotone has it's merits with disc at 6.

PF mode is a very good all purpose setting and in this mode sensitivity can range from the 70's up to the 90's depending on site conditions and user tolerance.
JE mode is pure high gain and is very sensitive to small high conductors all settings can remain the same except the sensitivity will be a lot lower around 45 to 55 with no depth loss.

Any signal needs to be care full checked from all angles and directions of the compass until you find which direction gives the strongest clearest and hopefully 2 way repeatable sound, at this point the VDU readout can be checked and i dig anything above 18.

With practise there will be a few exceptions, if for example the target size in pinpoint mode is broad and long with a reading of 18 or so the target is likely to be a large piece of iron.

Motion all metal mode is also very good and goes deep, the VDU readout will still give you an idea most of the time as to the nature of the target, again i dig anything above 18.

I often switch from one to the other over the same target just to get an idea of what is going on.

As with any detector it takes time to get to know it, with the above settings and other tips from all on this forum helps us get there a lot quicker.

Take care, Mart.

All good tips thus far. Also, don't be afaird to dig some of the good sounding one way hits. I am digging quite a few silvers and wheaties that are only one way high tones and usually these are coins on edge or slanted and also occasionally, close to some trash item. HH jim tn

The Deepest mode has to be all metal Motion mode , without the shackels of any Discrimination holding it down.
Works for me every time ,and you haver the added bonus with this detector that it will still give you the ID read outs of the Targets digital value to help you decide what to dig and what not to dig. As the guy previous said and i agree, don`t dig any target ID value "under" 18 , and ignore the Targets coming in at 85 to 99 . They are always large Iron . This Detector is So good, it really is that simple.

This is great. The forum needs guys jumping in with this kind of info.
Makes it better for everybody. Thanks, for sharing.

sure does!..much appreciated!.. and can be a real time saver in the field!

however, pass up those 90 readings. Halves and silver dollars read 90, I know. Unfortunately, so does bigger pieces of copper and other things. Silver, though, does sound sweet. HH jim tn

That is where the pinpoint mode can come in useful, as previously stated a coin reading around the 90 plus mark will be in a small plan view area, large iron will be much bigger length and breath wise.
Once you have done some testing and maybe some fruitless digging!!
The difference will noticeable most of the time.
Also when over large iron check out the Fe Bar Graph on the right hand side and see what it does when sweeping over the target.

Take care, Mart.

Careful i dug a silver ring this summer and just retested it and it hits at 90 -- 91

Last year my low ID was around 22 but i will drop that to 18 when we start all over again in the spring

Thanks Mike G

Amen to Jeb's advice on the all-metal mode. If you're in a trashy turf area with old coins below, I'd try what has worked wonders for me. Delta Pitch, Discrim = 6, DE mode, Sensitivity 80+, only dig targets indicated in the bottom third of your depth meter. If it's old coins you want in the turf, they are gonna be deep most of the time. Don't waste energy or time digging 1979 clad quarters at 5 inches.

if I only dug deeper coin hits, those deeper then 5 in., I would sure be passing up a lot of silver and other older coin varieties and most good jewelry. In fact, my last silver coin find came yesterday, a 52d Wash. quarter, from less then 3" deep. Glad to see, though, that you are successful with your method. HH jim tn

Jim,

Yep, there are always going to be exceptions. I'm just playing the odds, after getting a good target profile at a given turf site. At a new turf site, I'll dig the first 20 or 30 signals, no matter the depth, to calibrate how far targets have sunk. No doubt I've passed up some goodies, but also no doubt I would not be digging wheat cents and silver coins as often if I started digging shallow signals. To me, jewelry and modern coins are renewable resources, people are going to be losing them forever at these parks. Silver coins, on the other hand........people ain't losing THOSE these days. Happy hunting. - Jim
